Biwot – simply the best
Shadrack Biwot followed up his Front Street Mile triumph with a win in the International 10K to claim a memorable race weekend double – and amazingly he then completed the treble in the Half-Marathon a day later.
The Kenyan proved to be a cut above the rest of the elite men's runners on Saturday as he cruised to a comfortable victory for the second time in successive days.
Making his International Race Weekend debut, the 24-year-old broke the 30 minutes barrier with a time of 29 minutes, 34 seconds.
American Steve Slattery came second in 30.38 while Kumsa Magersa of Ethiopia finished in third position, posting a time of 31.19.
Biwot said he was surprised none of his rivals were able to stick with him when he decided to break away from the front pack.
"I had to do it the hard way," said Biwot, "Nobody went with me so it was pretty tough. If it had not been for the spectators then it would have been very difficult for me. Those guys were just great.
"I am in good shape and decided to just keep a good tempo. It was not easy though and some of the hills were pretty tough. I am very happy especially to have won both of the races."
Biwot said he intended to defend his title in 2011 after 'falling in love' with Bermuda.
"I will definitely be back next year," said the US-based runner. "I love this place.
"The people are very nice here and really respect runners; I have been like 'wow'. Where I am from people do not respect runners, they will be honking their horns at you and telling you to get out of way."
Biwot has started the new year where he left off 2009.
Last year saw him set life-time bests at 5,000 metres outdoors and 3,000 metres indoors. Competing in Oregon, he ran a 5,000m race in 13.36 in April, and two months earlier clocked 7.55 for an indoor 3,000m at New York's Armory.
