Blazers take sting out of Hornets
Dandy Town 0 Boulevard 2
Cool and deadly are perhaps the best superlatives to describe Boulevard's Boxing Day dismantling of Dandy Town at Wellington Oval yesterday.
Goals either side of the half by Rieko Trott and Jason Davis saw Blazers avenge a recent 4-2 league loss to Hornets and take route one to a first Dudley Eve final in nearly two decades.
After abosrbing some early pressure from an attack-minded Hornets, Blazers took the lead for good against the run of play when Trott rose unchallenged in the box to head home a Takehyi Walker corner.
Davis, who has made a seamless transition to his new team following a move from First Division Wolves, then put the match away on 52 minutes with a scorcher that beat Town 'keeper Daniel Johnson for pace at the near post.
Blazers were equally as efficient in the middle of the park and for the second straight match kept a clean sheet as South African 'keeper, Andrew Jjombwe, and his supporting cast in front of him squeezed the life out of a blunt Hornets attack that for the most part was kept under wraps.
It was a workmanlike display that drew rave reviews from Blazers skipper Walker who has warned all that oppose that "the best is yet to come".
"Everyone came to play for us today and I was very pleased with our performance. Today was a big match for us and another step towards getting to the final," he said.
Even in the absences of the big three – Jahmah Samuels, Melchisedec Gibbons and Micheal Parsons – Blazers were too powerful for Hornets to contain on a spacious pitch where their intricate passing and purposeful off-the-ball running gradually took its toll on their opponents.
Boulevard 'keeper Jjombwe was also at his best between the uprights and defenders John Payne, Hopte Burrows, Ajani Gibbons and Conneko Trott were just as dilligent in removing the sting from a Hornets attack led by Damon Ming, skipper Lashun Dill and Raymond Beach.
"I felt our whole backline had a good game and our keeper also showed up to play today," added Walker.
Blazers will now take on the eventual winner of next Tuesday night's match at Somerset Cricket Club in the New Year's Day final at Lords where they will bid to put an end to a 17-year Dudley Eve drought.
Asked which team he'd prefer to meet in the final, Walker paused for a moment and then replied: "It really doesn't matter. We are looking forward to playing whoever."
Town might have tossed and turned in their sleep last night as they didn't play badly at all. They were just outgunned by a well-drilled Blazers side that made the most of their chances in front of goal.
Town actually started off the stronger of the two but found themselves trailing when Trott was first to Walker's corner-kick from the right, nodding his effort to the left of Johnson to ignite celebrations among his team's supporters.
Moments later Blazers threatened to increase their lead after Davis, who has been influential in Blazers' Dudley Eve campaign to this point, weaved his through the Hornets' defence and then watched as his inviting pass rolled untouched across the goalmouth.
Striker Angelo Simmons, who scored Boulevard's winner against PHC in their Dudley Eve opener, had a shot saved at the back post as Blazers began to take full advantage of some slack defending down Town's right side.
Recognising his team's shortcomings at the rear, Hornets coach Scott Morton, overseeing his first official match in charge of the Pembroke club, eventually put an end to David Signor's 29-minute nightmare at right full back by replacing him with striker Antwan Russell to try and bolster his attack.
Gradually Russell's entrance got the juices flowing and Town were nearly back on level terms when Heys Wolfe shot just wide after turning his marker inside out and unleashing from the top of the box.
Town picked up where they left off after the break and came close on several occasions to opening their account.
Striker Beach brought off a fine acrobatic save from Jjombwe and then Wolfe just failed to get his head to a cross from college student Seion Darrell that went untouched across the goalmouth.
Beach was at it again in the 51st minute. With his back to goal, the mercurial striker controlled the ball on his chest and spun between two defenders only to see his last touch blocked by the quick-thinking Jjombwe, who raced off his line to thwart the danger.
But just as it seemed as though a Hornets goal was imminent, Davis struck a body blow at the opposite end to put the final result beyond doubt. Pouncing over a short pass from the right, the national team player unleashed a fierce right-footed shot from a slight angle that flew past Johnson and sent Blazers on their way to a first major cup final in nearly two years.
