Borden back as BCB look to the future
Bermuda Cricket Board have handed Delyone Borden and Malachi Jones the opportunity to resurrect their international careers, but those of George O'Brien and Jacobi Robinson are lying in tatters.
The board unveiled their latest High Performance Senior Squad yesterday, with Borden and Jones the most notable inclusions alongside the likes of Irving Romaine, Rodney Trott, and Stephen Outerbridge.
There is a good mix of youth and experience in the preliminary 16-man squad, with talented youngsters Jordan DeSilva, Terryn Fray and Kevon Fubler all included.
Chris Douglas also returns after he missed the World Cup qualifiers in South Africa through injury, but there is no initial place for Glenn Blakeney, who is recovering from an injury he sustained on that same trip. However the Bailey's Bay player is expected to join the squad once he has been assessed and passed fit by the BCB medical staff.
Borden has been given an early shot at redemption after he stormed off the pitch in a pay-row during the team's trip to the West Indies earlier this year, and was subsequently left out of the World Cup qualifying squad.
The spinner's return may come as a surprise but a senior BCB official said the board were comfortable that Borden had seen 'the error of his ways'.
Jones too is expected to bring a greater commitment to the squad after a previous spell in the national team saw him frequently clash with authority. The Southampton Rangers bowler then took a break from cricket to attend school in the US, and he was badly missed in South Africa.
While Borden's inclusion will raise a few eyebrows, the complete omission of fast bowler O'Brien is likely to cause greater consternation amongst the national team's supporters.
The St David's player injured his knee during the World Cup qualifiers in South Africa and only played his first game of cricket last weekend, when he took three wickets for St David's in a Commercial League win over North Village.
However, according to a senior BCB official, even a fit O'Brien would have been left out of the squad. There have been issues with the bowler's fitness in the recent past, and the official said that O'Brien had refused to be treated for his injury by the team's physio when he was in South Africa.
Given that O'Brien also has a court appearance coming up in August after he was charged with GBH for using a Taser stun-gun on a love-rival, a charge he has denied, the feeling is that the bowler is not someone that the BCB want around the team.
"He (O'Brien) is never going to change," said the official, "it's time we forgot about him completely and moved on."
There is a similar feeling amongst members of the cricket board when it comes to Somerset skipper Jacobi Robinson. Originally left out of the World Cup qualifiers squad for being overweight, Robinson eventually travelled to South Africa as a late replacement for the injured Chris Douglas.
At the time there were concerns that Robinson's weight caused him to break down with injuries, and his failure to lose the excess baggage was seen as an unwillingness to fully commit to the national team.
According to officials who travelled to South Africa, the Somerset player's commitment once on tour left a lot to be desired, and his performance during the tournament, when he took two wickets in three games before a shoulder injury ended his tour, was hardly impressive.
Commitment will be the name of the game for the latest members of Bermuda's High Performance Programme. The squad will be fully contracted to the BCB and will be required to meet various targets both on, and off, the pitch.
Players will train twice a week and have gym membership to continue to work on their strength, flexibility and fitness levels.
"With the domestic season in full swing, these sessions will add to the players conditioning while fine tuning their skills and awareness in preparation for Bermuda's continued participation in ICC Associate High Performance Cricket," said Bermuda coach Gus Logie.
