Boulevard get back on track after mini-slump
Devonshire Colts 1
Boulevard Blazers 4
Boulevard put on a finishing masterclass as they got their title challenge back on track at Police Field yesterday.
Beginning life without Andrew Bascome, Blazers brought an emphatic end to a mini-slump that had seen them lose their previous two league games, with Niko Smith, Ajani Gibbons, Ian Coke and Angelo Simmons all scoring.
And it might have been more with Drewonde Bascome and Quadir Maynard both hitting the crossbar, while Colts keeper Gregory Rose pulled off three fine one-on-one saves to keep his side from being completely overwhelmed.
Not that it always seemed that, that would be the case. The teams were level after a first half that was characterised by sloppy passing, defensive errors, and involved two sides who were trying to play at 100mph on a pitch that is not conducive to flowing football of any kind.
Blazers took the lead when Skyah Furbert was left unmarked at the back post from a corner, and Smith expertly turned in his nod-down. Colts had already been defending desperately by that point, with Sean Perinchief and Enrique Wilkin both making last ditch tackles to deny the visiting team.
That they were allowed back into the game at all was entirely down to a mistake by Boulevard defender Jamah Samuels. He missed a relatively simple header after a long ball was pumped out of the Colts defence, and Kyle Jones nipped in to touch the ball passed Shejuan Swan in the Blazers goal.
Even so, Blazers might have gone in at the break ahead, but Bascome's well struck free-kick hit the crossbar and bounced out, before being scrambled clear.
The second half was much the same as the first, Boulevard dominated, and their passing eventually tore Colts apart. Terry Foote's clumsy challenge on Smith gave Gibbons the chance to put his side ahead from the penalty spot, and he hit the perfect penalty, smashing the ball into the top right hand corner.
Coke got into the act moments later, scoring the goal of the game. Maynard's cross-field ball came across Coke's body, his first touch opened up the angle, his second set the ball, and his third sent it rocketing past Rose.
The Boulevard winger then turned provider, slipping a ball through to Simmons, who turned and shot in one fluid movement to seal the points.
