Bucknor tipped to take over as umpires' chief
Retired Test umpire Steve Bucknor could become the West Indies Cricket Umpires Association's (WICUA) new president during the association's 24th bienniel convention to be held at the Grotto Bay Hotel next week.
Bucknor, who stood in a record 128 Tests, will be attending the convention as part of the Jamaican delegation and has been nominated for president in the general elections which are to be held during four-day event that is being funded by Bermuda Cricket Board.
The 62-year old Jamaican, who has stood in the previous five World Cup finals, bowed out of international cricket in March of this year following the Windies' back-to-back ODIs against England at Kensington Oval.
The ICC elite panel umpire and former football referee began his international umpiring career in 1989 and went on to officiate in a record 128 Tests and 181 ODIs.
Bucknor's ascent in the international cricket arena was nothing short of meteoric as his appointment to the 1992 World Cup arrived after standing in four Test matches and a handful of ODIs.
In 2005 he became the first umpire to stand in 100 Test matches and only former colleagues David Shepherd and Rudi Koertzen have umpired in more ODIs than Bucknor.
Next week's convention, the first of its kind to take place on Bermuda's shores since 1993, will see local umpires Richard Austin, Anthony Fubler and Kent Gibbons receive their WICUA badges and certificates during the awards ceremony.
The trio successfully completed the WICUA oral and practical exams last June.
Austin and Fubler were recently appointed to the ICC's 'A' and 'B' Panels of Umpires, Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association (BCUA) president Wally Manders confirmed last week.
WICUA delegates are scheduled to arrive today and will attend a church service at the historical St.Peter's Church in St.George's tomorrow.
This year's convention will be officially opened by Sports Minister Glenn Blakeney on Monday and concludes next Friday evening with the President's Dinner and Awards Ceremony at Grotto Bay.
During the course of the convention, delegates will take part in various social events, including a 30-over contest involving the visiting umpires and their local counterparts at Sea Breeze Oval.
The WICUA is divided into four groups with Area One comprising of Bermuda, Jamaica, Canada, USA and Cayman Island.
Windward Islands make up Area Two, Leeward Island Area Three while Guyana, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago make up Area Four.
