Build-up for ISL begins with Friday draft
The Island Soccer League (ISL)/ Hope4Life draft is on Friday at the Grotto Bay Beach resort and I want to take some time to let you know what this all means and what the process is.
The coaches from the ISL will have the chance to select their players for the upcoming season which starts on May 21 at the National Sports Centre.
There are eight teams in the league and each coach has been putting together players they may want to select.
The teams from last year are only able to protect four players, this means to fill their roster the coaches have to select another eight players.
Now many of the coaches have an idea who they may want but it does not work that way.
Each coach will pick in an order based on last year's results. For example, if a team came in at the bottom of the table last year then that coach has first pick.
This means the coaches have to keep their picks secret until draft day.
Draft day is exciting because players will be waiting to hear their name called and hope they have impressed the coaches enough through the domestic season or the combine, which is being held this week at the BAA Field.
At the draft, each coach will have one minute to select a player. If a coach takes longer than one minute, he will miss his pick and has to wait until the end of the draft to select which means all the players he wanted may have been taken by other coaches.
The ISL will be paying players this season and all players will be responsible to do appearances in the community.
Our dress code and code of conduct will also be enforced this season and we want coaches to make sure they not only select players on their talent but players willing to change and be professional.
The MVP for the upcoming ISL/Hope4Life season will be rewarded with a motorbike courtesy of Cycle Care.
This is the players' league and it is important they understand the responsibilities that come with being professional.
On draft night the new ISL Netball Tournament coaches will be releasing their protected players list for their upcoming event in August.
The eight netball ISL coaches will be under the same pressure as the soccer coaches so being part of the draft on Friday will be a great experience for them because they will get first hand knowledge of how it runs.
Also at the draft we will be talking about the direction for the league for the next three years.
Players, family and friends, if you are looking to attend the draft on Friday, please note dress code is smart/business and starts at 7 p.m.
At the draft we will be also releasing the new ISL song that will be played alongside the old one throughout the season.
The ISL netball and soccer players will be handing out copies at the Lindos' locations on Saturday between 11 a.m and 7 p.m.
So as we move forward towards our fourth season of the ISL/Hope4Life I hope you show your support as our athletes look to entertain you this summer.
Until next time!
