Bulls coach demands more from Khano after first win

New York Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osario has demanded more attacking threat from Khano Smith, admitting: "He's not the player I think he can be."

Smith cut a subdued figure during Red Bulls' maiden win of the MLS season against Real Salt Lake at Giants Stadium on Saturday and was substituted after 74 minutes.

Although efficient in possession, the Bermuda international rarely troubled his full back and offered little going forward for Red Bulls who were reduced to 10 men in the second period after Jeremy Hall was harshly sent off.

Goals in either half from strike pairing Macoumba Kandji and Juan Pablo Angel handed Red Bulls the 2-0 win.

"He's still not the Khano that I think he can be," Osario told The Royal Gazette during his post match press conference.

"He's finding his place and as a team player he's doing well but as an individual player we need to find a little more from him particularly in the attacking third."

Too often Smith was overly cautious in the final third of the pitch and seemed reluctant to use his blistering turn of speed to burn past his marker, leaving Osario visibly frustrated at times during the match.

"In isolated situations he needs to take his defender one-on-one and produce more for us when we are attacking.

"Hopefully we can get him beating his full back in one-on-one situations," added Osario, who said he would be making changes to his starting line-up for Red Bulls' match at Kansas City Wizards on Thursday.

"Depending on who we play against I always make considerations (to the starting line-up)," he said.

"Plus there are other guys who deserve a chance and we have two games in four days and need to keep everybody fresh."

Smith missed Red Bulls' opening game of the season through suspension but has started the following four matches for his new club.

The 28-year-old signed for Red Bulls in pre-season from the league's new-boys Seattle Sounders who he left without playing a match for them.
