Burgess set for debut
St. George's wicketkeeper Christian Burgess will make his debut for Bermuda on Monday after being included in the final squad for the upcoming series against UAE.
Burgess replaces regular wicketkeeper Jekon Edness, who has dropped out of the team for personal reasons.
Head coach David Moore also released bowlers Justin Pitcher and Stephan Dill back to their clubs ahead of the four-day Intercontinental Shield game. However, both are likely to play some part in the two 50-over, and two Twenty20 games that will be played towards the end of the tour.
"Jekon Edness has pulled out for personal reasons, and we are going to give Christian a chance," said Moore. "Christian has been training with us, he's a young enthusiastic guy, we were hoping to give him an opportunity, we didn't think it would be this early but he's going to be given the opportunity to play for Bermuda at the senior level."
In all, Moore has kept 15 players from which to choose the final 11 on Monday, including all three spinners, Joshua Gilbert, Tamauri Tucker and Rodney Trott.
"The reason why I have left it at 15 is because of the strong competition currently in the squad," said Moore. "The guys have all been working very hard, all those guys deserved their spot in the 17. Stephan Dill has gone back because at this stage he's only a young developing fast bowler and I just don't think four-day cricket is good for him just currently.
"And with Justin, he's just come back from injury and he hasn't really bowled enough, and so for me to ask him to get through a four-day game . . . although he may well do it, I just don't want to take that risk because of course there is lots more cricket to come as well. I just want both of them to have more bowling in club cricket as well."
As well as Justin Pitcher and Dill, Moore also intends to use Janeiro Tucker and OJ Pitcher in the limited overs matches. However, there will be no place for PHC duo Jason Anderson and Dean Stephens in the squad for the forseable future.
The pair were personally contacted by Moore about being involved in all the games but both refused to play for their country.
"Dean Stephens and Jason Anderson were both offered opportunities to play for Bermuda in the upcoming series against UAE, and they both declined the opportunity," said Moore.
Fiqre Crockwell has also been included in the squad despite the fact that he will face a disciplinary hearing on Thursday night. Fortunately for Crockwell the hearing has been adjourned until next Thursday so that, according to Bermuda Cricket Board, 'the chairman can clarify a technical matter raised at the meeting'.
Bermuda squad: D Hemp, S Outerbridge, C Foggo, F Crockwell, I Romaine, S Rayner, T Fray, C Burgess, R Trott, J Gilbert, T Tucker, S Kelly, J DeSilva, K Tucker, J West.
