Calderon running for president

Bermuda Football Foundation (BFF) co-founder and ex-national coach Richard Calderon will run against incumbent Larry Mussenden for the soon to be vacated Bermuda Football Association (BFA) presidency at this month's Annual General Meeting (AGM).

It was learned yesterday that Calderon has officially thrown his hat into the ring and declared his intentions to oppose Mussenden at the upcoming September 29 AGM to be held at Young Men's Social Club.

"I plan to run for the presidency of the BFA and I along with several others have made our intentions known, presented our case, have the pedigree, understand the subtlies and nuances of what is required," said Calderon.

Mussenden clung to office by a thread the last time he ran for the top post in 2004, edging past rival Mark Trott by a single vote, and is again expected to be pushed hard against Calderon who is said to have garnered strong backing amid an election campaign that began a year ago.

Also up for grabs at the AGM is the post of second vice-president, currently held by Women's Football Committee chairman Gregory Grimes, in addition to the allotted nine executive council member (club representative) positions.

Calderon's twin brother and past BFA technical committee chairman, Robert, has also decided to run for an executive council's post along with Boulevard Community Club (BCC) president Steven Proctor.

In accordance with BFA statutes, the names of all nominees had to be submitted prior to last month's deadline to the nominating club and date stamped when they were received.

Earlier this year, Mussenden, the man largely credited for bringing the association's ambitious multi-million dollar strategic plan to fruition, announced his intentions to seek re-election for the BFA presidency - a post he has served for the past seven years after succeeding predecessor Neville Tyrell.

"We have developed a long-term plan and have secured considerable funding (Government) to accomplish the aims as set out in the strategic plan," said Mussenden.

"Over my years as president we have forged good working relationships between president, executive and affiliates and we have accomplished many objectives as we have worked hard to develop and improve all areas of the game for the benefit of the family of football."
