Campbell sends Forties crashing
burst on Sunday as Jamaican Association maintained their pressure on Commercial Cricket League leaders Hemisphere Leg Trappers.
Campbell's six for seven haul from nine overs -- four of them maidens -- sent Forties crashing to 39 all out, their lowest total in 16 seasons in the league, as Jamaican Association recorded a crushing 150-run victory at Nationals.
But Jamaican Association failed to make up any ground, remaining 15 points behind the leaders, as Leg Trappers fought off a determined challenge from defending champions Watford Sports Club to win a high-scoring game, highlighted by two half centuries, by four wickets at the Royal Naval Field.
The victory took Leg Trappers past the 100-point mark and the outcome of this season's title chase could well hinge on this weekend's match between the two leading clubs. Trappers drew first blood when they beat their rivals by two wickets at Police Field in their opening encounter.
North Village consolidated their position in third place, 18 points behind Jamaican Association, with an emphatic seven-wicket win over St. David's at Lord's after fast bowler Derek Bell routed the east enders with a six-wicket return.
West End Warriors completed the double over Public Transportation Board, winning by 52 runs at Shelly Bay despite Brian Brangman's belligerent knock of 70.
Campbell, 40, was the toast of Jamaican Association after he topscored with 47 in a total of 189 for nine before masterminding 10-man Forties' demise, the last eight wickets going down for the addition of just 19 runs.
"We wined and dined him after the game,'' said team spokesman Glen Barrett afterwards.
Campbell's ally in the demolition was David Gibbs, who followed up an unbeaten 26 by taking two for 18. Seven batsmen were bowled.
Campbell and Lloyd Morrison (34) gave Jamaican Association a flying start after they were sent in on a damp pitch, adding 89 for the first wicket although both profited from being dropped early on. Donovan Livingston made 23. Skipper Gordon Campbell and Brian Holdipp each took three wickets for Forties while Harold Minors chipped in with two for 40.
Skipper Terry Corday and his son Terence teamed up to spur 10-man Watford Sports Club to 196 for seven after four wickets went down for 78. Terry hammered 62 while his son made 32.
Pick of the attack was David Outrim, who later steered Leg Trappers home with an unbeaten 35. Outrim grabbed three for 31 while David Hosier took two for 31.
Leg Trappers slipped to 50 for three but allrounder Ian Smith struck eight fours and a six in a knock of 74, adding 91 runs for the fourth wicket with James Broadbent (24), to swing the game their way. Outrim and David Napier (12 not out) featured in an unbroken stand of 45 to seal victory with three overs to spare and complete the double.
Blake West (three for 62) and George Rock (two for 15) were Watford's most successful bowlers.
Bell's six for 21 from 11.2 overs, coupled with two for 22 by Mike Young, sent St. David's tumbling to 61 all out. An unbeaten 28 by Alex Virgil helped North Village reach their target in the 20th over and complete the double.
Quincey Aberdeen hit four fours and three sixes as he topscored with 44 in his second game for nine-man West End Warriors who piled up 186, other useful contributions coming from allrounder Vernon Eve (36), Dean Smith (35) and Armel Thomas (20). Pick of the eight-man PTB attack were Leon Dickinson (three for 52) and newcomer Jay Belinka (two for 19). Brangman slammed six sixes and four fours in his 70 and Belinka chipped in with 25 but Eve had the final say, claiming four for 38 in 12 overs, as PTB slipped to 134 all out.
