Can Rooney beat Ronaldo's goal record?

At the beginning of this season people would have looked at you rather strange if you had said that Wayne Rooney could beat Ronaldo's record tally of –42 goals in a season which the Portuguese international and current World Player of the Year accomplished in the 2007/08 season.

Yes Rooney is a great goalscorer ¿ but he has never even been close to that figure before.

But after watching him this season I think there is a chance he could go past Ronaldo's magnificent record.

And that would be amazing.

He just cannot stop scoring. Just the fact that he is scoring so many with headers is quite something taking into account that he is not a tall player.

In the first leg against AC Milan in the Champions League he scored twice and then this week in the return leg at Old Trafford he scored another good header to open the scoring and then got a second in United's 4-0 victory.

Four goals in two games against a top side like AC Milan is nothing to sneeze at.

Those two goals this week ¿ and he could have got more if he had not been substituted ¿ has taken his tally up to 30 goals this season.

And there still are a fair number of games left in the Premier League plus United are through to the Champions League quarter-finals.

He still has time to get another 12 or 13 goals and the way he is playing at the moment don't bet against him.

I have talked about Rooney a fair bit this season and with good reason. He is certainly one of the best players in the world right now and what I really like is his energy. The young Englishman must be a nightmare to defend against.

Tomorrow, United are up against Fulham and while the London club have played United quite well in the past, I am looking for Rooney to score ¿ because that is what he does!

While the faithful in Milan must have been shocked at United's 7-2 aggregate win in the Champions League, the fans in Madrid must feel stunned to see their team go out of the competition after being held by Lyon 1-1 on Wednesday night with the French advancing 2-1 on aggregate.

Last summer Real spent more than $300 million signing Ronaldo, Kaka, Benzema and Alonso but this week's result just shows you that money cannot buy you everything.

This was the sixth consecutive year that Real have made an early exit from the competition and their supporters are up in arms about it.

But Real did have good chances to win the game on Wednesday but failed to take their chances, so fair play to Lyon who have dominated French football for the past seven or eight years. Now it is going to be interesting to see how far they can go.

Now Real have only to look forward to the Spanish league title. They have played well in the league and came back from 2-0 down last weekend to win 3-2 to beat Sevilla and are now neck and neck with Barcelona.

In fact, Real have been in good form in the league, having won their last seven games and scoring about 25 goals and conceding only six.

The pressure is now on the players and more importantly coach Manuel Pellegrini to deliver the league title.

I was happy to see Arsenal cruise through into the Champions League quarter-finals with their second leg 5-0 victory over Porto while Bayern Munich also made it through against Fiorentina.

Next week should see a cracking match between Italian champions Inter Milan and Chelsea. Obviously there has been a lot of publicity about Jose Mourinho returning to Stamford Bridge which should add a little spice to the occasion.

But Inter had better hope Chelsea do not do a United on them. My money is on Chelsea ¿ they and other English teams ¿ seem to be stronger in the Champions League.

Inter may be hoping that my boys West Ham can put a bit of a spoke in the wheels this weekend against Chelsea.

But it will be very, very tough. We lost 2-1 to Bolton last weekend in a match I was hoping we would win.

However, I have to hand it to Kevin Davies from Bolton. I do believe that without Davies, Bolton would be a far poorer team.

He really leads by example and I have followed his career since when he was a young lad at Southampton.

Davies is good with his feet and doesn't mind putting his head in. He has a strong personality and puts himself about. It's just a pity he has not had a good look-in with England.
