Canada warm up for tri-series against Test trio
ICC Associates Canada will square off against Test nations West Indies, Pakistan and Bangladesh at the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club from August 14-17 – just a week before they and the Windies take part in a tri-series involving Bermuda.
The tournament will mark the first Twenty/20 International hosted by the Canadians who were recently beaten by Bermuda in a One-Day International (ODI) series and in a Intercontinental Cup match on home soil. It will be the first time since 1999 that a Test side have visited Canada.
During the 1990s the Toronto club hosted the Sahara Cup, a series that was played between Test teams Pakistan and India.
In 1997 ex-Pakistan skipper Inzamam ul- Haq was slapped with a two-match ban for assaulting a rowdy fan during a Sahara Cup match against India at the Toronto venue where Bermuda will take on the Canadians and Chris Gayle's West Indies in a triangular series from August 22-28.
Gayle, who has scored 4,804 runs in 73 Test appearances for the Windies, said he and his team-mates would not be taking any prisoners against Bermuda and Canada next month.
"The aim is to use the tour as preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy and so it would be safe to say that we won't be taking the opponents lightly," Gayle told The Royal Gazette. "We would like all the guys to get a hit before going into Pakistan and so we will have some quality match preparation. We will be going out to play good cricket."
