Cann to take time out ¿ but will play this weekend

Lionel Cann has reiterated his intention to take time-out from Premier Division cricket this summer – although he will skipper St.David's senior side this weekend.

Due to a number of St.David's youth players being unavailable for action on Sunday Cann has agreed to skipper the East Enders against Somerset Cricket Club at Lords.

But he insisted his stance to play less senior cricket had not changed and only intends to play County matches and possibly Cup Match.

"I will be playing this weekend for St.David's," said Cann yesterday.

"However my position is still the same and I don't intend to play much senior cricket at all this season.

"A number of our Under-17 players can't play and so I've agreed to play for my team."

However, playing for St.David's senior team on Sunday would prevent Cann from appearing in the Commercial League again this season.

And he will meet with St.David's committee tonight to discuss a number of issues regarding this season.

Earlier this week Cann told The Royal Gazette he was unable to get motivated for Premier Division games and required a break from the game after playing for 23 straight seasons.

"I need some time to relax ... it's not unusual for a player to want some time off," he said.
