Celebrities to take on Under-11s
Charging in from the northern end is ten-year old pacer San'j Dill, bowling right-arm over the stumps to Governor Sir Richard Gozney.
Gozney pushes forward and is bowled . . . by a quicker delivery that moved slightly off the seam to leave the Celebrities floundering at 15 for six!
Unlikely as it may seem, that scenario could very well unfold when Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB), in conjunction with sponsors Hiscox Insurance Company Limited, stage the Hiscox 11 and Under Celebrity Cricket Festival at the National Sports Centre (NSC) on May 31, beginning at 1 p.m.
Local cricket's governing body announced plans yesterday for the inaugural event that will showcase some of the best up and coming cricketers against politicians, a US Counsel General, a pro boxer, a former Test cricketer as well as past and current members of Bermuda's senior national team in two limited overs matches.
The cricket festival is being held to commemorate Bermuda's 400th Anniversary with BCB president, Reggie Pearman, urging the public to attend what promises to be a fun family day.
"Fans are encouraged to come out and celebrate Bermuda's 400th Anniversary and enjoy the games and activities," said Pearman. "The Bermuda Cricket Board is extremely pleased to work alongside Hiscox to host this fun and exciting event."
Hiscox have been sponsors of the Board's burgeoning Under-11 Youth League, which has grown considerably from eight to 22 teams for the past three years.
"Hiscox have provided playing gear for all Under-11 teams, which has given the players the opportunity to experience the game using proper equipment," Pearman added.
Speaking on behalf of his company, Hiscox Chief Executive Officer, Charles Dupplin, commented: "It is tremendous to be able to help nurture the next generation of Bermuda cricketers and we hope the festival will underline the popularity of the national game at every level."
The inaugural cricket festival will begin with the Celebrities taking on the Under-11s at 1 p.m. followed by an all Under-11 East versus West All-Star match at 3 p.m.
Both contests are 24-overs affairs that will see batting and bowling restrictions applied, two runs deducted for each wicket that falls and current and ex-national team cricketers batting "wrong handed" to ensure a level playing field.
Entertainment for children will be provided during the event such as face painting, tattooing and a fun castle while lunch will also be provided for those in possession of tickets that can be obtained along with a free T-shirt from BCB headquarters on 9 Gorham Road, Hamilton prior to this month's event.
In addition to all the activity on and off the pitch, a raffle will be held with the proceeds going to the Sunshine League children's home.
Admission is free.
n In yesterday's article, titled 'Rec. miss match due to BCB short notice', it was stated that Board executive Allen Richardson replied "no" when asked did he think it was a "wise" decision to schedule First Division matches the same day as the Belco Cup when in fact the question posed was whether or not he thought the decision was "unwise".
The Royal Gazette stands by the story.
