Changes will improve the ISL this summer

This week I want to chat a little about the Island Soccer League (ISL) which begins on Friday and Saturday.

However, before I discuss some exciting changes to the ISL, I first have to mention an uplifting experience that I had this weekend when I had the privilege to meet a group of people who have been working hard to raise funds to send their young players on a soccer trip to England this summer.

It was amazing to see the unity, work and desire of these fundraisers. I've mentioned many times how we need to come together and support our young people and this was evidence of that.

I can definitely say this group have their young people's welfare at heart and made sure their venture was going to be successful.

So, I say thank you on behalf of some of the young people who may not realise what their parents are doing for them.

Now, back to business.

This is a big week for the ISL. It's the start of the third season and there will be eight teams working towards becoming the 2009 ISL champions.

Only one team can win the coveted championship trophy and have the honour of wearing a championship ring.

On Friday night we will see Andrew Bascome and his players from the Storm receive their 2008 Championship rings before the start of the first game, so if you are looking to be a part the celebrations be there from 6.45 p.m.

Remember if you buy any ticket for a game it will get you into any league or play-off game. Paying at the gate will be $12 and tickets are available at Cellular One on Reid Street.

This year will be an exciting one for the ISL as we have made some changes to our match day events.

We are looking to have local dancers, singers and special night promotions such as Oldie Goldie night and let's not forget the Cellular One girls handing out free stuff.

Plus, Bermuda Sports Network will be streaming the games live through their website www.bermudasportsnetwork.com

This will be a season for young players to show their skills and the older players to groom them with the etiquette of the game. During the last two years players, coaches and staff have done a great job with the code of conduct and upholding the mission of the ISL/Hope4Life Programme.

Their dedication has been tremendous and I praise them and wish them all a great season as they chase the ISL title.

Some of the changes that you will see for 2009:

n Bigger player promotion

n Players in community more

n More players getting chances to travel overseas for pro tryouts

n Referees getting support by overseas professional referees

n ISL All-stars getting a chance to make history once again.

n Coaches getting scouted by pros

n Increase of Game Day events and entertainment

n More media coverage

n ISL /Hope4Life young tournament and much more!!!

In a few weeks we will be holding a press conference that will help the growth of sports in Bermuda, not just soccer but many other sports.

As our goal with the Hope4Life is to bring all groups together to help save our community and, whether it's sports or community groups we must now step forward and join together to revive this beautiful place we call home.

Until next time!
