Clean sweep for Siese and crew

Martin Siese and crew chalked up their second clean sweep of the season in Granaway Deep over the weekend.

The veteran fitted dinghy skipper simply had things all his own way, posting three straight bullets to catapult Challenger II back to the top of the Coronation Cup points standings.

This year's battle for overall season honours has so far been a two-horse race between Challenger II and defending champions Contest III. And Sunday proved to be no exception with Challenger II coming out on top after another intense day of racing.

The Sandys Boat Club dinghy laid down the gauntlet by winning the first race after Contest III opted not to complete a penalty turn for colliding with Siese and crew on the first windward leg and subsequently withdrew from the race. Second place went to Elizabeth II followed by Victory IV in third.

Siese played the shifts to perfection in the day's second race and their decision not to fly a kite on two downwind runs paid dividends as the Sandys boat recorded a second straight win. Elizabeth II placed second while Contest III bounced back to round off the podium finishers.

Challenger II then put the finishing touches to a dominant display in ideal racing conditions by coming from the back of the fleet and overhauling leader Elizabeth II on a split tack on the final windward leg.

Having regained top spot in the overall season points standings, Siese and his crew will look to solidify their lead when racing resumes in Granaway Deep on August 9.
