Close battle for Champions League spot

I believe that the battle for the very important fourth-place Premier League spot to qualify for next season's Champions League will go right down to the last day of the season and today's match between Manchester United and Manchester City will have a big say in it – as will the match which sees Spurs hosting league leaders Chelsea later on today.

Spurs perhaps surprised some people this week when they beat Arsenal – but it didn't surprise me that much as the Gunners have been missing some very important players.

But I have to say that early goal by the Spurs teenager Rose was a cracker – could be the goal of the season.

And he scored it in his first Premier League start – real fairytale stuff.

Chelsea only managed to scrape by Wigan 1-0 last weekend and Spurs do have a chance of upsetting the Blues who really do not want to drop any points considering that they control their own destiny for the title.

The opening match today will see United visit their neighbours City and while derby games are always pretty good affairs with lots of passion, I expect this one to have that added bit of spice.

City have so much money behind them now and will be eager to get some revenge over United who won a 4-3 thriller last time around in the league. United also knocked out City in the League Cup and there was that bit of aggro between Neville and Tevez. It sets up nicely doesn't it?

City are a point ahead of Spurs so things will get very interesting.

And let's not forget Arsenal and Liverpool.

The Gunners visit Wigan but are without a host of stars even though striker Van Persie is fit again after being out for about five months. But Arsenal will not have Fabregas, Arshavin, Vermaelen, Gallas, Ramsay and Song for Sunday's match.

And my boys travel to Liverpool and I believe that Torres may not play which would suit me.

Liverpool fans have more on their minds as well since yesterday it was announced that the American owners want to sell the club which is heavily in debt. I wouldn't worry too much about that – Liverpool are one of the great names in the game and someone will come in and buy them.

While I am keeping an eye on other relegation threatened teams like Hull and Burnley I believe we have to take care of our own business. If we can get something out of Liverpool on Monday that would be great.

The semi-finals of the Champions League are next week and on Tuesday Inter host defending champions Barcelona who will be without a couple of key players. But they should be OK although I imagine that Mourinho will have something up his sleeve for them. He is a cagey fellow and no doubt would like to put a spoke in the wheels before the return leg the following week.

But Mourinho has his own problems of late in Serie A.

Roma has come on strong and that is without their main player Totti who has had some injuries this season.

I have to take my hat off to manager Ranieri. He has done wonders with the team and I have always liked him. I didn't think he was given a fair shot when he managed Chelsea who were so impatient to win the league title and the Champions League.

The other Champions League match between Bayern Munich and Lyon in Germany on Wednesday should be exciting. Lyon have been waiting for some time for that final breakthrough and Bayern showed how strong they are when they advanced from the quarters against Manchester United.
