'Club man' Wade ready for step up
BFA presidential candidate Mark Wade believes his hands-on experience at the club level could sway the election vote in his favour, writes Stephen Wright.
For 30 years Wade has been involved in local football at his boyhood team PHC Zebras where he now serves as vice-president.
And he hopes his thorough grounding in the domestic game will convince the affiliates he is the man to move Bermuda football forward.
"I think my strongest point is that I've been involved with a club since I was 14 as a player straight through to administration," said Wade, who previously served on the BFA's youth committee. "I think you would have to go quite a way back to find someone who has that sort of background. When the affiliates come to me they will know I have experienced some of the issues they are talking about."
Wade, a former PHC head coach, has been buoyed by the feedback he has received while canvassing the clubs for their support.
He said: "We're very pleased with the feedback we've been getting so far. The clubs seem generally receptive about the vision that we laid out and I'm looking forward to Wednesday.
"I've been happy with how it's gone and we'll have to see if that turns into a positive."
Should the votes go his way, Wade will not look to make wholesale changes as he believes it's important to maintain some continuity from one administration to the next.
"I think in the past there's been a lack of continuity and there has been some areas where we've kept reinventing the wheel," he said. "We're definitely looking to maintain some continuity. I'm certainly looking to have a good review of the national programme and I want to improve the surfaces we play on so the game looks better to the fans."
Wade has also put his name forward as an executive member at tomorrow night's election.
