Colts' coach to run for post with the BFA
Wolves Sports Club president Hewvonnie Brown and Devonshire Colts coach Ray Jones have been included on a revivsed list of eligible candidates to run for executive council during Bermuda Football Association's Annual General Meeting (AGM) next Monday.
Brown is now among those seeking Charles Clarke's vacated post while it is understood Jones is keen to succeed the outgoing Andrew Griffith as the association's treasurer.
Former Referee Committee chairman Clarke and treasurer Griffith both stood down earlier this month through work and personal commitments.
Among those seeking to join the BFA's hierachy are Boulevard Community Club president Steven Proctor and former BFA technical committee chairman Robert Calderon whose twin brother Richard will run off against BFA president Larry Mussenden for the association's top post at next week's AGM.
BFA second vice president Gregory Grimes will run unopossed while incumbents Fred Lewis, Lloyd Smith, Lee Holder, Troy Brimmer, Mark Trott, Jon Beard and Anthony Francis will also seek re-election at the upcoming AGM.
Mussenden edged rival Mark Trott by a single vote in 2004 and could have his work cut out for him again this time around up against Bermuda Football Foundation co-funder and ex-national coach Calderon who is said to have garnered strong backing.
Clarke, who served in various roles during his seven-year stint at the BFA, suggested earlier this month that the climate maybe right for change in leadership at the BFA.
"It's always good for change because at some point in life you have to realise that you can only take things so far and then it comes a time for someone else to take it a little further," he told The Royal Gazette. "You can only do so much; you can't be there forever hoping to maintain that position.
"I think it's always healthy to have a challenge; it keeps everybody on their toes. If your performance (in office) has been stellar then you should have no problem securing the necessary votes in order to maintain that position. But I think change would be a good thing at this time."
Griffith disagreed, arguing: "Change for the sake of change isn't necessarily the answer as sometimes you need stability. Personally, I am behind Larry fully because he has achieved a lot in the past. Larry still has a lot of things he wants to accomplish and I believe he can get it done."
Last week Griffith revealed there are "dissidents" within the association's corridors of power who don't see eye-to-eye with president Mussenden.
"There is definitely a divide within the BFA. I don't want to go into naming people, but people out there know who they are," he said.
"There are people that are dissidents on the executive that take things personally or always feel that a decision is some sort of conspiracy when really it's just people trying to act in the best interests of football."
