Colts crush Hot Peppers in battle at the bottom
Hamilton Parish 0– Devonshire Colts 5
Colts proved they are not going to hang around the bottom of the Premier Division without offering a spirited effort to pull clear with this convincing win at Wellington Oval yesterday.
The ninth-placed visitors thrashed last-placed Parish, who virtually surrendered after Romone Smith was sent off by referee Alton Reid for a second bookable offence early on.
The win saw Keishon Smith's team continue their fine run and move up three places in the table to sixth place.
After Parish were shorthanded, Colts went on to build a lead at the interval and then tore their opponents to shreds with a four-goal blitz when play re-started. There were no signs of the misery to come after Parish's impressive start when forward Angelo Cannonier forced Jason Wade in the Colts' goal to dive and turn his short around the post.
Colts recovered from the early pressure and Andre Famous forced Nigel Burgess in the Parish goal to make a similarly good save.
Minutes later Colts' hard working forward Kyle Jones should have put his side ahead but his shot from sailed wide of the far post. Just when it was looking to be a game full of explosive attacking, it drifted into a one-side affair once Smith got his marching orders to reduce Parish to 10 men.
Colts pressed forward with confidence with Jones providing a cross which saw McQuin Burch dive and send a brilliant header in off the post after 29 minutes. Jones then followed up by heading a corner just wide of the post while Famous stormed a 22-yard shot into the chest of goalkeeper Burgess.
The inevitable go-ahead goal came just before half-time when Darren Williams scored from close range after a sensational run down the left flank.
The second half saw complete dominance by Colts with Parish being restricted to isolated raids which produced threats from Patrick Richardson and Chris Caisey – both of whom should have scored.
But saddled between these two raids by Parish were more enterprising runs at the defence by Colts' attack with several efforts going just wide or high of the goal.
Coolridge Durham put them ahead two-up from a goal scramble and Terry Foote stroked home a penalty to increase Colts' advantage.
The home side were really rocked midway through the second period when the usual steady goalkeeper Burgess allowed a seemingly harmless low grounder by Jones into the net.
Burgess was to make a few great saves afterwards to deny Colts when their forwards were in good goalscoring positions but by then the damage had been done
Carlos Trott finished off Parish's day of misery when he scored the fifth goal after 77 minutes. Parish also had the agony of having Jevon Lambert red carded off the bench after Smith was sent off.
