Composure helps Bean to defend his RBT crown

Cornell Bean jr.

A composed Cornell Bean Jr. fired a final round even par 71to capture the fourth annual Ross 'Blackie' Talbot Junior International Championship.

The champion overcame a five stroke first round deficit to edge out Nick Jones by seven strokes.

Bean, the son of Professional Golfer Cornell Bean, had a quiet round of two birdies along with three bogies to see off any challenge from Jones who could only put together a round of 77.

Jones ran into difficulty on the par-5 third hole and carded a five-over par 10 and this opened a large lead that Bean was able to take advantage of.

Alex Osborne defended his 15-17 age group title from the previous year when he posted a 232, four shots better than Damian Palayandi.

Osborne faded at the end when he carded a double bogey and quadruple bogey on the last two holes but had a big enough lead to keep ahold of his title and be regarded as the best 15 - 17yr old in the tournament.

Island Games competitor Tariquah Walikraam went one better this year, winning the Girl's Division by five strokes. She finished third in 2007 and second in 2008.

Yet Walikraam didn't have smooth sailing the whole way with Great Britain's Rosie Davies nipping on her heels heading into the final stretch.

The champion shot a fine final round 73 but had to grind it out as Davies got to within one shot on the 53rd hole before letting the title slip through her grasps.

In the 12-14 Boy's group, Matt Oshrine shot a 75 to go along with his fine 71 yesterday in his second round for a total of 224 and ended up with a sizeable lead over Alistair Cameron.

Dwayne Pearman Jr finished third on 254.

Thomas Allkins shot 44 in the low gross, carrying his total to 131to hold off Walker Campbell (150) to win the Novice nine-hole division, while Jai onni Outerbridge (109) squeaked past Zachery White (113) to claim the nine-hole low net title.
