Corona League set for new season

With the 2010/11 Corona League season on the horizon, president Michael McGrath is full of anticipation ahead of today's official launch event for the new campaign.

It will be held at Gosling's where the fixture list will be revealed and the addition of the league's new 12th team, North Village, will be announced.

Set up in the days after the collapse of the Commercial League, the league is run independently of the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) and was been a huge hit with players and supporters last campaign.

The inaugural season saw Tuff Dogs claim the league title, while West End United won the league's first ever knockout competition, The Bistro Cup, beating Vasco in the final.

BAA Field's top of the range artificial pitch was also a huge pull in attracting teams and players to the league, while a host of qualified referees officiating the games elevated it beyond just being a light-hearted kick-about.

The expansion team, North Village, who won the BFA Masters League, and include the side's former stars such as Elliott Jennings, Steve Coddington and Tillman Darrell.

McGrath said he believed the product would further improve this season after attracting more sponsors.

"I think everyone felt a bit of a hole in their weekends for the first few weeks after the first season finished and now that everyone is refreshed after the summer break we can't wait for the first game of a season that promises to be even more exciting than the last," said McGrath.

"The schedule will be released tomorrow at the launch and we will welcome the 12th team to the league and discuss the improvements that have been made to the league over the summer with more sponsors coming on board."

Buoyed by the success of the first season in which fans came out by the droves, McGrath expects this year to be bigger and better.

"We have had many compliments about the first season of the league and it has driven us on to make this season even more of a success than the last and increase the family atmosphere that was always a pleasure to see last campaign."
