Cougars, Blazers in search for first piece of soccer silverware

Devonshire Cougars and Boulevard Blazers will again try to put their names on the 2009 Charity Cup tomorrow at the second time of asking at Wellington Oval after last week's match never got underway.

The game was postponed as heavy storms swept the Island with Bermuda Football Association taking the decision to re-arrange the game when the Oval pitch became waterlogged. The women's Charity Cup between Lady Cougars and Lady Rams was also put back a week and will precede tomorrow's men's clash.

With both sides challenging for the Charity Cup having had major clouds hanging over their clubs for varying reasons, one will temporarily be able shed their problems and bask in the glory of lifting the first piece of silverware of the season.

Takeyhi Walker of Boulevard earlier this week spoke about the lay-off and the extra week's preparation. "The extra week gave us some extra time to tighten up some things that can be done better from our side," he said. "Our approach is still the same."

Blazers come to the Charity via a 5-3 FA Cup thrashing of Dandy Town last year and will be looking to start off the season on the right foot.

Cougars, defending league champions, will also be trying to show that even without a coach they can't be ignored.

"Right now at this point we have done our homework, we have put in our time on the field and we all feel good," stated skipper Kwame Steede. "We will take this game as any other game, step by step and play to our potential. Every game is important so we will look to get off on the right foot and see how far we have come in the off season."

n Fixtures for the inaugural season of the Corona League have been finalised with BAA and Team Fire getting the season underway at the new BAA Field at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 9.

Robin Hood and Lobster Pot will play the second game that evening, with three games taking place the following day. Valley will face MR Onions, Vasco Mariners host Prison Officers, and St David's take on Tuff Dogs.

All this season's games will be played at the new BAA facility, with two games played on a Friday night at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., and the three Saturday games starting at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m..
