Cougars call on Boyles for CFU Champs
Former Devonshire Cougars coach Devarr Boyles is on the verge of joining the defending champions for their 'Caribbean adventure' at the CFU Club Championships qualifiers in St. Vincent.
Cougars have made a request to Bermuda Football Association (BFA) for Boyles to travel with them for next month's group matches against host side Avenues United, Leo Victor, of Surinam, and Trinidad powerhouse Joe Public.
And it appears Cougars' SOS for Boyles will be answered by the BFA who have been the driving force behind the club entering the competition and are acting as their sponsors.
Cougars qualified for the CFU Club Championship by winning the Premier Division title under Boyles last season, but have struggled since he quit the club to become the BFA's youth director.
However, club president Craig Clarke is confident Boyles can help the defending champions rediscover their form in 'the Breadfruit Isle' if given permission by the BFA.
"There are some things taking place. His (Devarr's) name has been down on our travel list and we welcome any assistance from the BFA as, after all, we're representing Bermuda as well as Devonshire Cougars," said Clarke.
"With their help I believe we can do some really good things in these qualifiers."
David Sabir, BFA general secretary, said the BFA would have the final say on whether Boyles would join Cougars in St. Vincent.
"The decision will be left for the Association to decide," Sabir said. "There will be some consultation with Devarr to decide whether he will join Devonshire Cougars in this venture. The best decision will be made for all parties, I'm sure."
Boyles sat on the Cougars bench during their 3-2 defeat against Trinidad Under-23s at the National Sports Centre in December.
Cougars showed plenty of heart during that game and Clarke believes their performance against the Soca Warriors suggests they can be a formidable force in St. Vincent.
"The players are up for it, they're ready for it, they're looking forward to it and will do the best they can for their country," he said. "Our performance against Trinidad bodes well for us going into these qualifiers," he said.
"We're going down there looking to win. I'm a demanding person and we will not be intimidated, we're looking to win this group. We have some experienced players in Kwame Steede, Aljame Zuill and Domico Coddington."
Another seasoned player who Cougars are hoping will boost their chances in St. Vincent is Bermuda international defender Darius Cox.
"Darius Cox is in the team to travel. He's at university at the moment but hopefully he will be there with us," said Clarke.
Clarke said Cougars would take an 18-man squad and that those players were awaiting drug test results.
Originally Cougars had been drawn against Surinam's Leo Victor over two legs but the CFU have since altered the format of the competition because of the hefty costs of travelling to Bermuda.
Sabir said: "The BFA in order to make themselves a viable participant in the competition, and recognising that teams were concerned about the costs of coming to Bermuda, we put a number of proposals to the CFU. The entire region's format has now been changed."
Back in the 1980s, PHC Zebras side took Bermuda football to dizzying heights by reaching the quarter-finals of the Concacaf Club Championship.
The CFU Championships are a preliminary stage of the Concacaf Club Championships.
