Cougars coach out to make history
Devonshire Cougars' class of 2010 are determined to etch their names into club folklore by becoming their first group of players to win the FA Cup, player/coach Kwame Steede said yesterday.
But first the Big Cats face the not-so simple task of beating in-form North Village in a rearranged semi-final showdown at Somerset Cricket Club tonight.
Veteran midfielder Steede, who will lead Cougars into their inaugural CFU Club Championship in St. Vincent later this month, reckons their clash against the Rams has all the ingredients of a cup classic.
"Both Cougars and Village are very good teams," said Steede. "They (Village) have had a number wins and we know what to expect from them.
"They have been coming at us all season and I think it's going to be a great game."
Realistically, the FA Cup is the only domestic competition Cougars can still win and Steede admitted a trophyless season would be a bitter pill to swallow for the defending league champions.
"It really is a huge game for us," he said. "Hopefully we will have a full strength team to pick from, God willing.
"The FA Cup is always huge and even bigger for us as we've never won it. It would be nice to make history again for the club.
"I'm not really looking at it from a coaching standpoint, I'm a player and I want to lift the cup as a player."
Later this month Cougars travel to St. Vincent for three matches against host side Avenues United, Leo Victor of Suriname, and Trinidad giants Joe Public.
Knocking Village out of the cup to reach the final would be the perfect preparation for their 'Caribbean adventure', said Steede.
"At the moment there's a lot of excitement at the club ahead of CFU Club Championship," said the former Bermuda national team skipper.
"Time is ticking on and it's a big month for us. It would be great to leave for St. Vincent knowing we are in the FA Cup final."
The CFU Club Championships are a preliminary stage of the Concacaf Champions League.
