Cougars thrash Warriors
Dev Cougars 7 St David's 1
From the ridiculous to the sublime, Devonshire Cougars put in a Jekyll and Hyde performance as they thrashed St David's last night.
Kwame Steede and Chris Caisey both scored twice, and Shaki Pearman, Domico Coddington, and Tamani Steede all got on the score sheet as the Big Cats left their supporters in seventh heaven.
Awful in the first half, far better in the second, the only thing that marred an otherwise perfect evening for Cougars was that they should have scored twice as many goals as they did. A series of shocking misses in either were only forgiveable because they were never likely to prove costly against a truly average St David's team.
The visiting side managed to create just one shot on goal in the entire 90 minutes, when, with the game goalless, a hopeful long -ball out of defence sent Angelo Cannonier racing through, but he could only fire the ball straight at Ricardo Brangman.
Kwame Steede opened his side's account soon after with a header that came off the back of his head and looped over Warriors goalkeeper Javon Minors.
Given the scrappy nature of the first half, it was somewhat inevitable that St David's equaliser should come from a Cougars mistake. Brangman and defender Kijuan Franks got in a mix-up, Brangman tried to blast the ball clear, but only succeded in firing straight at Warriors striker Sean Boddington.
The ball cannoned off Boddington, and flew into the goal without the striker really knowing what was happening.
That thought was as good as it got for St David's with Cougars running them ragged after the break, and the only reason the scoreline didn't reach double figures was Cougars' own failings in front of goal.
In the First Division last night, Social Club beat Wolves 2-0 with goals from Callon Burns and Andrew Samuels.
Cougars though have set the tone for the weekend, and champions Dandy Town will probably be eager to answer in their game against Devonshire Colts tomorrow.
Colts coach Keishon Smith meanwhile is anxious to see how his troops get along at St. John's Field.
While the champions have made a superb start to the season, Colts haven't looked bad either, scoring goals whilst looking a different side from years past.
The true test, however, will be tomorrow, and Smith is anxious to see how his side cope with the champions.
"We are playing the defending champions and it is a good way to see how far you have come thus far in the season," said Smith. "Jomar has done an excellent job out there, they have gotten off to a good start and for us we just want to find our way and start picking up positive results.
"We are scoring goals now, we just need to be a little bit more stingy in terms of the defence, letting in some soft goals has been our demise if we can sort this out we will be ok."
One thing that could determine the winner of the match will be the fitness of the both clubs, with Colts having played only two matches thus far, while Town are currently playing at least games a week.
Not playing last weekend due to their match with Somerset Eagles being postponed, Smith believes it wasn't a blessing or a disadvantage to not play.
"Not playing last week wasn't a blessing because everyone needs match fitness and you can only get that by playing those games.
"Unfortunately when you are not playing as we haven't in a few weeks, or an elite team that can get ready for games through playing in the Dudley Eve and so forth, you find yourself not playing as many games as the others.
"On one hand the rest and so forth can be good for us but also the other sides getting better with playing time can be a disadvantage to us.
"We also have a few guys coming in when the last transfer players can come through so it could be good for them to get a few games as well, btu we will be ok and see how this weekend pans out."
Another match worth paying to see this weekend will be North Village and their trip to Wellington Oval to face new boys St. George's who have made an encouraging start to their season. The day's remaining match will see Boulevard visit Southampton Rangers.
