Cougars win battle of bragging rights
Devonshire Colts 1
Devonshire Cougars 2
Devonshire Cougars completed the league double over parish rivals Devonshire Colts yesterday, winning at Police Field as they continue to prepare for the Concacaf Champions League in just under two weeks time.
Goals from Domico Coddington and Aljame Zuill either side of the break were enough to get all three points for the visitors, with Andre Famous grabbing Colts' lone goal.
In what turned out to be a scrappy affair neither side got off to a good start with the wind being a major factor in the opening stanza.
The defending champions looked the liveliest in the first 20 minutes, trying to work the ball along the ground with Kwame Steede and cousin Moses Steede pulling the strings and letting their wingers make inroads to the all important first goal. It was in one of the flowing moves wide that Coddington opened the scoring in the 21st minute.
Striker Aljame Zuill was the recipient of the delicate throughball deep in the host's territory and surged towards the by-line before cutting the ball back for an onrushing Coddington at the back post to slide into the net.
The score became two nil eight minutes later when Moses Steede was brought down needlessly by Terry Foote in the area and Zuill stepped up to slot his effort to Colts goalkeeper Jason Wade's left.
Mikre Pace had a chance to bring his side back within one but scuffed his effort wide just before the break.
With the match drifting into a stalemate midway through the second half, it was left to substitute Andre Famous to breathe new life into the game in the 76th minute when he was put behind the Cougars back four and slotted by LaVintz Tota to make it 2-1.
That would be as close as Colts would come, however, with the game ending with no further excitement. With the loss, Colts are now only three points above Hamilton Parish in the relegation battle.
Skipper for the day, Kijuan Franks said each match going forward was a preliminary for the bigger showdowns in the Concacaf Cup and their FA Cup semi-final against North Village next week.
"It was a scrappy affair, our first half was better then our second but it is a derby so to get three points was good," said Franks.
"It was well deserved on our part and we will look forward to next week.
"Preparations for the Champions League are still ongoing but getting positive results in matches like this gives us encouragement that we are doing what is required of us.
"Going into a tournament that big on a winning note is always a bonus and we are taking it stride for stride until we get to that stage.
"Next week is FA Cup and it is a big game for us and we have to show up for that match.
"We can't afford to show up how we did today so we will come into training this week with a renewed focus and train hard and we will play hard to get a good result."

Rocker's strike came midway through he second half as he buried his former club to snatch all three points with a well-struck effort.
Antwan Russell had two opportunities to get on the scoresheet but could not make the most of the chances.
Somerset Trojans 1
Dandy Town 2
A penalty from Jared Peniston and a single strike from Chris Anderson was enough to carry league leaders Dandy Town to victory over Somerset Trojans at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday night.
Desmond Burgess scored Trojans' goal late in the match.
The deadlock was broken midway through the first half when a handball was called on Trojans' Darin Minors inside the area, with Peniston stepping up and stroking home his effort home for the visitors.
Anderson added a second in the final minute.
Burgess scored seconds later from the spot after Town conceded a penalty of their own to set up a tense final few minutes.
