Cup Match legends honoured

Hall of Fame cricketer Clarence (Tuppence) Parfitt was among those honoured during Heritage Productions' Fourth Annual Emancipation Celebration Awards Luncheon held at Bermuda Industrial Union headquarters.

The legendary spin bowler represented St. George's between 1965 and 1981 and during that period compiled a record 115 wickets at an average of 10.83 runs, including a record nine for 47 in 1976.

Parfitt also represented Bermuda in the 1979 ICC Trophy before taking up residence in Scotland where he played professionally at Arbroath United.

The local legend did not attend last Sunday's luncheon and accepting an award on his behalf was son, Dario Parfitt.

Also honoured this year were Somerset's Kenny Cann, Joe Bailey, Aaron Shakir and Randy Horton who guided the West Enders to a famous victory over St. George's at Somerset Cricket Club in 1979.

Others recognised from the East End this year were Sheldon Furbert, Fred (Dicty) Trott and Lee Raynor, who along with Rupert Scotland, posted the highest partnership in Cup Match history (229 runs) at Somerset Cricket Club in 1974.

Ex-Somerset skipper Joe Bailey described the luncheon as "heart warming" and thanked organisers (Norbert Salaam, Cromwell Shakir, Dr. Radell Tankard, Khamal Best and Calmae Best) for putting on what he described as a "fabulous event".

"It was an honour to be recognised for something positive you have contributed to local sport, and the gesture was very much appreciated," he said.

Bailey took 39 Cup Match wickets for Somerset between 1963 and 1981 and also captained the West Enders in the classic.

"It's great to be honoured but there were a lot of other people who helped me along the way," he acknowledged. "I played with some great players at Somerset and played against some great players from St.George's."
