Dazzling Renegades overpower Mariners

A strong Renegades side overwhelmed Mariners with a dazzling display of forward power and faultless back play to score six tries but only one of those was converted by Nick Elwig.

For Renegades, Dermot Casling controlled the centre of the field with several good breaks and well timed passes.

In the forwards, flanker Andy Cook made his return to rugby with two good tries.

Other tries were scored by Elwig, Martin Jinks, Robert Niven and Norman Cotterell.

Mariners were disorganised primarily as a result of fielding almost a completely different side to the one that beat Police a week ago.

Peter Voss, Mariners captain, is trying to develop a regular nucleus of players in order to establish continuity in teamwork which is the key to any rugby team's success.

Teachers 42, Police 7 Teachers produced their best display of the season which included a second half of excellent support play from the forwards.

Three of Teachers' seven tries were a direct result of domination in the scrummage where good controlled ball was won often against the put in and used widely by the backrow forwards Ron Hook and Henry Adderley, who both scored tries in the first half.

Completing the first half scoring was Craig Smith's try following up a high kick which was fumbled by Police on their own goal-line.

Peter Boothe added the conversion and later a penalty to bring the score to 20-0 at halftime.

Police, although conceding the scrummage ball, won considerable line-out possession but squandered it away with poor handling and sloppy alignment in the back.

Fly-half Scott Perry saved the day for Police on a number of occasions by having the only option but to kick the ball into touch.

It was Perry who made a good break after a poor clearance by Teachers and fed wing Gary Jackson for the first score of the second half, converted by Andy Wright.

It was all Teachers after that and good support play by Hook, Adderley and Pete Simons paved the way for four more tries through Tony Roache, Boothe, Simons and Eddie King.

Simons was awarded the Amstel Player of the Week for his hooking display and general support work.
