De ste. Croix bids to keep perfect record

Neil de ste. Croix will be looking to make it four wins out of four when the fourth race of the Conrad's Mountain Bike Racing Series takes place tomorrow morning at Admiralty Park (8.30 a.m.).

De ste. Croix conquered a new course last Sunday at Ferry Reach Park in a race which had a start time of 3.30 p.m. instead of the usual 8.30 a.m.

And it remains to be seen how many riders will challenge the points leader on the last weekend before Christmas.

On a cold afternoon last Sunday, Paul Jacks jumped into an early lead in the Men's 'A' group but was closely followed by de ste Croix and Graeme Miller.

As the riders headed into the first wooded section and onto the railway trail, the group started to string out with Jacks' lack of pre-season training taking its toll, leaving de ste Croix to take a lead he never relinquished.

After the first lap the order was de ste Croix, Miller, Mark Hatherley, Grant Goudge, Peter Dunne and Jacks.

Goudge had been charging hard to make up the distance lost on lap one and caught and passed Miller and Hatherley on one of the climbs. And on what is considered the series' most technically demanding course, the positions stayed the same through five windswept laps.

However, on lap five Hatherley hit the wall and Miller pounced, despite having earlier taken a nasty tumble.

At the finish, de ste Croix managed to hold off Goudge by a minute with Miller coming home third.

In the the Men's 'B' race, Norbert Meyer opened an early gap and although nursing his bike due to a broken spoke managed to hold off Brian Steinhoff.

Ed Jordan, fresh from organising the Tokio kids series earlier in the afternoon, took third with Crimestoppers' Rickai Lightbourne taking fourth.

The victory gave Meyer a firm grip on the series.

No category 'A' females were in the field and Sarah Jordan raced alone to win the Women's 'B'.

In Novices' One, Steve Millington took the win from Jose Pena.

Male and female 13-16 categories also attracted a single entry with Mark Godfrey and Elizabeth Jordan competing respectively.

Daniel Oatley was again triumphant among the Boys' Under-12 while Daniel Hetzel placed second, Christian Oatley third and Ryan Day fourth.
