Deadly Domico warns defenders
Bermuda Hogges' goal machine Domico Coddington believes his recent scoring spree will have opposing defenders quaking in their boots – as he strives to become the league's deadliest striker.
Hogges' encouraging start to the USL-D2 season has largely been built on Coddington's goal-grabbing exploits with the 24-year-old finding the net in each of his last three matches.
And he reckons it won't be long before his red-hot form rubs off on strike partner Antwan Russell whose clever link-up play and waspish movement has also caused defences problems this season.
"I want the other teams to fear me," said Coddington. "If they start worrying about me then that could create more opportunities for Antwan who's been playing well.
"I'm trying to stay really motivated as I want to be known as a goalscorer in this league. I'm trying to make a name for myself as well as make a name for the Hogges."
Coddington scored a rare headed goal to earn Hogges a win over Richmond Kickers from a Blenn Bean corner-kick last week – a trick he doesn't expect to repeat too often this term.
He said: "We've been working on our set-pieces in training but I think me scoring with my head was a bit of luck. I don't tend to score too many headed goals so I was especially pleased with that one."
A cruel run of leg injuries has frustratingly stalled Coddington's pursuit of turning professional and reduced him to a bit part player for both Hogges and Devonshire Cougars in the last two years.
Although past trials at USL-D1 outfit Atlanta Silverbacks, MLS team New England Revolution and Serie C side AS Acireala gave him a taste of the big-time, his thirst for a pro-contract has so far remained unquenched.
Not that he's given up hope.
A prolific season for the Hogges and the speedy striker believes his chances of joining the pro-ranks will once again be up and running.
"I believe if I have a great season for the Hogges I will then have the opportunity to go on trial at professional clubs again," Coddington said. "But for the moment I'm just concentrating on doing well for the Hogges – that's my priority.
"I didn't play too much for Cougars last season because of injury, so I'm determined to try and be involved in every Hogges' game this season."
Hogges take on high-flying Wilmington Hammerheads in a double-header this week.
Friday night's match kicks off at 8 p.m. and Sunday's game at 7 p.m.
Both matches will be held at the National Sports Centre.
