Dill misses out on last race finals
Talented teenager Shaquille Dill completed his outstanding track season by reaching the semi-finals of the 800 metres at the Canadian National Championships last week.
The 16-year-old, who won the gold medal in the 800m at this summer's CAC Junior Championships, placed 14th out of a field of 24 semi-finalists at the Varsity Centre in Toronto.
Dill attended the meet with his coach Gerry Swan and para track athlete Jessica Lewis, who placed second in both the 100m and 200m.
Swan said twice during Dill's semi-final he had his rhythm disrupted from body contact and was subsequently spiked as the field remained bunched for most of the first lap of the 800m. Dill finished fifth in a time of one minute 53.08 seconds.
"(Shaquille) competed in the third of three men's semi-final races and he was educated to the physical contact, or roughness that can be part of the world of middle distance competition," said former national coach Swan.
"Although disappointed with his time, Shaquille can take much delight (from this season)."
Dill, who also claimed silver at this year's Carifta Games, has improved his personal best time on five occasions since February, and by 5.63 seconds during 2010.
Lewis, a wheelchair athlete, achieved a personal best in the 200m at the Canadian National Championships with a time of 37.83 seconds.
She will sign off her season at an upcoming meet in Windsor, Ontario.
