Dillas, Mansell set up all-Bermuda final

Jarryd Dillas stunned tournament favourite Bill Jenks three and two to move into the final of the Amateur Match Play Championships.

The Bermudian put in a solid display and will face Nick Mansell, who beat Camiko Smith four and two yesterday, in today's decider at Mid Ocean Club.

Dillas' achievement was all the more impressive given the poundings that Jenks had handed out to defending champion Eric Plisko and Damian Palaynandi earlier in the week. But it was the American who spent much of yesterday scrambling to stay in contention.

Three down and standing on the 16th green tournament favourite Jenks had a 20-foot downhill putt to save his week.

The American's putt started on line, the weight looked perfect, it seemed for all the world like the ball was going to drop into the centre of the cup, but at the last minute it moved, just a fraction.

From going into the hole the ball rolled agonisingly over the left edge, and kept going, and going, and going. It eventually rolled right off the green, and with it went any hopes he might of had of winning the event.

However, in reality, the match was over long before Jenks lined up his putt at 16, it really got away from him four holes earlier when he missed a three-footer at 12. It was a shot that changed the match.

Dillas began the day ahead, parring the first, which Jenks could only three putt for bogey. However, the American fought back and won three of the next four holes, going two-up when he drained a 15 foot birdie putt on five.

The game then swung back and forth with Dillas getting back to all-square after eight. The momentum shifted for a final time on a four-hole stretch after the turn.

Dillas sunk a left to right 20 foot putt for birdie at 11 to move ahead and then escaped with a half at the next hole when Jenks three putted from 35 feet. The American had hit his second shot long, but was still looking favourite after Dillas hooked his second shot left, and then thinned another chip through the green.

All Jenks needed to do was get down in two. He rolled his first putt up to within three feet and then somehow managed to miss, letting Dillas scramble a half. A regulation par at 13 was enough to send Dillas two-up, and then a majestic nine-iron to two feet at 14 set up another birdie and a three-hole lead he never lost.

"It (the match) was a lot closer that the outcome would suggest," said Dillas. "The front nine it was back and forth, back and forth, and then it was really 11, 12, 13, 14, that little stretch that changed the match.

"I just squeeked it out. He'd been playing great all week and I was trying to get to the 13 hole because he'd been dusting everybody pretty good all week. I'm just happy to be in the final."

Mansell was equally delighted with his win. The Ocean View superintendent has been struggling with some aspects of his game this week, but never seemed likely to lose to Smith.

"I've been getting away with a lot, this week," said Mansell. "I've had some awful swings, but I've just been getting up and down from some awful places, and putting well, which I didn't think I would.

"I wasn't expecting to get this far in the tournament, so I'm stoked. I'm feeling pretty confident right now."

In the Ladies' Championship, top qualifier Katrin Burnie will face Tracy Nash in today's final.

Burnie dispatched Susan Vallis five and four while Tracy Nash beat Ann Symonds two and one.

In the consolation final Julie Delhunty-Moore will take on Sandy Hutchings. Delhunty-Moore beat Shelly Palmer two-up yesterday, while Hutchings dispatched Maria Harris five and four.

Last year's champion Eric Plisko will be around on the final day of the tournament again after he shook off the disapointment of his early loss to make the Consolation final. The American, who beat Richard Schreiner five and four yesterday, faces Jose Gerardo who overcame Brent Wolgast three and two.
