Father and son Steven and Chris Douglas are on the verge of making Cup Match history.

But to some, their appearance in the annual classic might be considered controversial.

ICC Associate Region Elite Panel umpire Steven is on the short list of officials for this week's two-day match at Somerset Cricket Club while son Chris will represent the hosts as a colt.

Promising all-rounder Douglas is the most in-form batsman at the moment having ammassed an 67.4 average and slammed two big hundreds (122 and 130) already this summer.

Douglas was chosen as man-of-the-match following Bermuda's win over Ireland earlier this year at the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia.

Father Steven, who stood in last year's rain-hit match at Wellington Oval, is favoured to return again this year along with fellow ICC Associate Region Elite Panel umpire Roger Dill.

Should he be picked again, it would, it's believed, to be the first time that a father/son, umpire/player combination has been selected for Cup Match.

West Indies Test legend, Clive Lloyd, has again been designated match commissioner.

Meanwhile, St.George's' 15-year-old colt Tre Govia will also take his place in the record books when he steps onto the pitch at Somerset as the youngest player to debut in the classic since Noel Gibbons in 1971.

Gibbons is now coach of St.George's while cousin and former Cup Match team-mate, Charlie Marshall, is the most senior player in the match at 47.

Somerset all-rounder Janeiro Tucker is also poised to make history this year as he needs only 40 runs to become the first Somerset batsman to score 1,000 runs in Cup Match.

To date Tucker is the only Somerset batsman to score a century in St.George's and currently holds the record for the highest individual score, 186, a score that was achieved in 2001.

Last year saw St.George's stalwart Clay Smith, the only batsman to score three centuries in Cup Match, join elder brother Wendell and Marshall as the only batsmen to score 1,000 runs in the classic.

Ex-St.George's skipper Wendell Smith was the first to reach the milestone in 1992.
