East throw away lead as West win All-Star match
West All-Stars 85
East All-Stars 81
East All-Star Steven Simons couldn't save his team from defeat on Saturday night as they lost to their West counterparts 85-81 in front of a large audience at Bermuda College gym.
All-Star MVP Corey Vance of the Hamilton Cane Toads led all scorers with 27 points in his side's four-point victory.
Simons scored 22 points to guide his side to what had looked like a straightforward win midway through the second half with a lead of ten points with eight minutes remaining.
The lead was fuelled by a 12-2 run and after a series of tap-ins by Chae Powell and two 24-second violations by the West, the West found themselves down by 14 with six minutes left on the clock.
As the East went to their bench the West, led by their young starters Richard Warner and Tai-Jour Riley, went on an 8-0 run, cutting the lead to six.
With the lead slowly shrinking, the full court press by the West allowed for Tai-Jour Riley to produce two steals and easy lay-ups, cutting the East's lead to 58-56 with three minutes remaining.
Tied at 68-68 with seven seconds left, Seward Smith missed a buzzer beater that would have won the game for the West, forcing overtime.
In overtime, Jon Noseworthy and Simons came out of the gate early scoring two quick buckets to give the East a four-point lead.
However, in the last two minutes Vance took over the game scoring a pair of contested jumpers, an acrobatic lay-up and a series of three pointers to lead the West in a dramatic comeback with a final score of 85-81.
Earlier in the evening, Simons set the bar high as the first shooter in the three-point competition, scoring 12 baskets.
Vance started off hot but struggled as he reached the third and fourth rack of balls.
He finished the opening round scoring eight.
Sinclar Vickers, who averages four three-pointers a game, couldn't find his magic touch, and only managed four baskets.
In the final, it was Vance against Simons. It was Simons who found his rhythm early on, sinking the money ball shot on the first and second rack, and finished up his final round sinking ten baskets.
Reigning three point champion Vance couldn't carry the momentum from the opening round to the final and ended up with six baskets.
