East v West showdown makes for an entertaining weekend
This weekend Bermuda Cricket Board host the semi-finals and finals of the Twenty20 at the National Sports Centre on Saturday and Sunday. What makes this event even more special is that it will pit the East End of the Island against the West in both semi-finals.
In the first semi-final and probably the game of the day we will see St. George's play Willow Cuts. In the second semi-final and surely to be just as entertaining, the mighty St. David's play Somerset.
In the east, the fans will be hoping for a St. David's v St. George's final in what is probably one of the biggest rivalries in local sports.
However, in the west the fans will be hoping it will be a Somerset v Willow Cuts final as they too have a long history of battles. Any one of these two finals would be ideal, but no matter who makes it through, bragging rights are at stake.
Let us take a closer look at each team and see what they are bringing to the table.
First, the defending champions St. David's who won their group comfortably with a perfect record. They had a very quiet season by their standards, but Twenty20 is their game. It will take a very good performance to dethrone them.
In Lionel Cann they possess the most lethal Twenty20 player, having scored 97 off 37 balls against a respectable Western Stars' team. On top of that, they have seasoned players like Delyone Borden, OJ Pitcher, Justin Pitcher and Dell Hollis. Just in case they all fail on the day, they have Lauren Marshall who is relatively unknown, but a solid player and young Shae Pitcher.
Pitcher happened to post the highest score thus far of 130 against Willow Cuts, hence showing St. David's' depth and the reason behind them being champions.
Willow Cuts were runners-up in this division and rightfully so.
Cuts only loss came at the hands of St. David's, but they made light work of the remaining teams. They have a good balance of youth and experience.
Chris Douglas is lethal and on his day he can destroy any bowling attack. Also, Bergon Spence and Dexter Basden have made some sterling performances and have shown they still have it.
In addition Willow Cuts will welcome back Malachi Jones who has been on international duty. What Cuts lack in depth they make up in effort as they are a never say die type of team.
In the opposite group, St.George's were also undefeated winners but by the narrowest of margins with a one wicket win over Somerset in their final game.
However, prior to that, St.George's had demolished all teams and constantly posted 180-plus.
St. George's' strength is definitely in their batting having posted the highest team total of 287 for five against Flatts.
However, with captain Oronde Bascome and top order bat Mishael Paynter heading off to school, rumour has it both players could possibly be unavailable, which means yours truly may have to make a return.
In Dean Minors, Troy Hall and James Celestine, St. George's will look to bat their way to victory but if that doesn't work the bulk of the bowling will fall on the shoulders of Ryan Steede and Rudell Pitcher, two seasoned players.
Somerset finished second in this group.
Their display against St.George's showed their quality and if it wasn't for a bit of bad luck they could have finished first in their group. Ricky Hoyte has performed admirably and has played a major part in Somerset's success.
Jordan De Silva has handled the pressure of captaincy fairly well in Jacobi's absence but could the inner fighting and turmoil be their downfall?
Somerset are a team though that cannot be taken lightly, especially with players like Azeem Pitcher and Jermaine Warner, who are in fine form, along with youngsters Kamel Easton and Marcus Johnston who have both performed well with the ball.
On their day, Somerset are capable of beating any team but they will have to be at their best to overcome St. David's.
For me, the final I would love to see is St.George's v St.David's for personal reasons. This final would pit the two most devastating batsmen in Bermuda against each other.
The final would be a head to head showdown, Lionel ("The Finisher) Cann against James ("The Destroyer") Celestine. Having played with and coached both of these guys, I know what they are capable of. To see them go head to head and both perform at their best would make for one electrifying final.
Regardless of what happens over the two days I encourage the players to play hard, but play fair and may the best team win.
Leave the fans wanting to see more cricket as the season comes to an end.
