Elder statesman Ming ready to lead the way

Bermuda Hogges striker Takehyi Walker is in a race for full fitness for the start of next month's PDL season.

He may think he is still too young to be considered an elder statesman but Damon Ming insists he is comfortable with being an old head in a Bermuda Hogges squad full of fresh faces.

At just 30, Ming would not normally be described as a seasoned campaigner, but that is precisely what the Dandy Town winger has become in the Hogges dressing room compared to the raw teenagers and promising twentysomethings assembled by new head coach Scott Morton.

While he admits his own transition from rookie to veteran has come quicker than he would of liked, Ming is more than happy to help play a part in grooming the next batch of up and coming Bermudian youngsters.

"It's going to be a little bit different this season but the PDL isn't new to me, I played in it when I was younger for the Des Moines Mariners," said the former Barnet reserve.

"I'm looking to have a good time with the younger players as we have a real good group coming up.

"It's a little strange to be the oldest player but everyone gets to this stage of your career, you can't stay young forever.

"And with the likes of Jared, Seion, Keishen and Tyrell we have other players with lots of experience.

"I'm just looking to play for as long as I can, I still want to play at the highest level possible."

Ming, who is entering his fourth season with the franchise, has set his sights on representing his country in next year's World Cup qualifiers and believes a number of Hogges' new-look team will have forced their way into the senior national team by then.

"I hope to be involved in the qualifying stages of the next World Cup for Bermuda, I've already spoken to the BFA about that," he said.

"We have a real, real good group of young players coming through now. A few of these can make the grade whether it be in Europe or elsewhere.

"Nahki Wells is a really good player, Angelo (Simmons), Troy (Tucker) and Quadir (Maynard) are also players I like.

"I'm looking forward to the new season and hopefully the Hogges will be pushing for a play-off position."

Hogges will play in the Eastern Conference of the Mid Atlantic Division. Their opening PDL match will be against Reading United at the National Sports Centre, Friday, May 28.
