Evans, Adams riding high
Hayley Evans and Sophie Adams did something no junior cyclist from Bermuda has done before over the weekend – they won medals at the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Curacao.
The pair both claimed bronze medals at the championships, with Evans placing third in the 15 kilometre time trial, behind Josmary Geerman of Aruba and Nuhely Emerenciana of host country Curacao.
Adams took third in the 42.5 kilometre road race, with Emerenciana taking the gold medal and championship title with Geerman second, just two seconds ahead of Adams.
In the junior male races, Bermuda's team also rode well, demonstrating that the local cycling programme remains on track.
Thomas Godfrey completed the 20 kilometre time trial in the 17-18 age category just 20 seconds off the time of the third place finisher, leaving him in sixth place.
Aaron Place and Philip Woolridge finished ninth and tenth, respectively.
In the 15-16 age category, Alex Godfrey was the top local time trial finisher in ninth place with Ryan Gunn 13th and Tyree Armstrong 16th.
Sunday's road race just outside of the Curacao capital, Wilimstad, saw Alex Godfrey initiating the sprint finish in his category, leading with approximately 100 metres to go after almost 60 kilometres but was overtaken by the chasing peloton and finished ninth.
The junior 17-18 men's race of 85 kilometres finished with a group of ten riders sprinting for the line. Thomas Godfrey placed seventh in the group with a strong effort. Aaron Place found himself on the back side of a split in the peloton half-way through the race and had to fight to get back. Eventually he joined a chase group with several riders from Curacao and finished 15th. Woolridge suffered a puncture and eventually finished 17th.
"Having such a large team at this event and coming away with two medals is a source of great pride for the BBA and Bermuda," said Bermuda Bicycle Association president Peter Dunne.
"The enthusiasm with which our group embraced the preparation and competition was outstanding and our presence as a cycling nation was certainly noticed by the competing nations.
"Of course, we are thrilled with the medals won by Hayley and Sophie, and the entire team's performance is one that we feel demonstrates the increasing level of cycling in Bermuda."
