Evans and Houston target medal glory

Jeneko Place won silver (200m) Shaquille Dill won gold in 800mand bronze (100m) and , Henry Steves-Carty won silver in 800m.

Top Bermuda runners Tre Houston and Aaron Evans have set their sights on medal glory at this week's NACAC Under-23 Track and Field Championships in Florida.

Sprinter Houston and middle distance runner Evans touched down in the Sunshine State yesterday ahead of the championships looking to build upon their recent impressive performances.

Evans, who will be running the 800 metres, said he would be striving to add to the bronze he claimed for the University of Georgia at the NCAA Championships last month.

"My thoughts right now for NACAC is to win, I took a week off from running after the NCAA and I'm starting to get everything back together," he said.

"I'm expecting the final to be a very fast race because the two Americans competing are known for how they take out the race and lead from the front.

"So with that, I'm just going to sit back and use my kick to my advantage and see what happens."

Houston, who trains in the UK with world-renowned coach Tony Lester, is also feeling confident following his victory in the 100 and 200m at the recent National Championships.

His fastest times over the 100 and 200m distances to date are 10.6 and 21.3 and he is hopeful of going even quicker in Florida.

"I'm feeling very confident and ready for this competition," he said. "My training is going well and I'm very excited about that. If I execute how I do in training I should be good so I'm looking to run awesome times, make the finals and also have fun on the track."

So far this season Bermuda athletes have won medals at every major competition the Island has entered and Donna Watson, Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president is confident Evans and Houston can continue that trend.

"I'm very pleased with how the athletes have been performing this year," she said.

"We have returned with medals from every event we have participated in so far.

"We still have a few international meets left and I have no doubt that our athletes are going to continue to perform at a high standard." Athletes from 32 IAAF member-nations will compete in the NACAC (North American, Central American, and Caribbean Athletic Association) Under 23 Championships at the Miramar Ansin Sports Complex from July 9 - 11.

The event is primarily for those athletes too old for the Carifta Games but not yet ready for the professional level.
