Fahy leads the way as more records tumble
Malaysia with another national record over the weekend, but his was just one of a number of impressive performances at the Summer Age Group Championships.
Five sessions in the BASA Pool from early Friday evening through to late Sunday evening produced several new marks, with those recently returned from a successful showing at the Caribbean Championships in Barbados leading the way.
Fahy, a member of Harbour Club, set his latest record in the 100 metres backstroke with a time of one minute, 55 seconds, eclipsing team-mate Stephen Troake's former mark by five hundredths of a second.
As expected Yale student Fahy, the Island's top international swimmer, also won the overall men's 15 and over championship.
Sixteen year-old Jessica Sousa of Harbour Club continued her record-breaking season with a new age group mark of 2:32.78 in the 200m backstroke, beating the previous record which had stood for seven years by just 34 hundredths of a second.
And Harbour Club's Kiera Aitken, 14, set a new record when she clocked 2:36.55 in the 13-14 200m backstroke. Aitken achieved a AAA time -- the standard all local swimmers aim for -- in the 50m free and went on to win the overall 13-14 age group by just two points from sister Ashley.
Younger swimmers also got in on the record-breaking act with 11-year-old Stephen Kenny, representing the Triangle Club, clocking 3:02.43 in the 200m butterfly. That clipped 63 hundredths of a second off the previous mark.
Eight-year-old Elizabeth Brewin from Dolphins set an age group mark in the 50m free by a whopping three seconds as she went on to clinch the overall eight and under title.
Roy Allan Burch, 12, continued where he left off in Barbados by wrapping up the overall boys 11-12 title, producing an impressive AAA time of 27.56 in the 50m free.
Sharks and Bermuda squad team-mates Kimberly Frith and Lyndsay Taylor, both aged 16, achieved their first ever AAA times when they swam stroke for stroke in the 50m free to finish with times of 28.61 and 28.63 respectively.
Dolphins' Michael O'Connor was the boys 13-14 overall winner, Sharks' Tamika Williams the girls 15 and over champion and Melanie Fullerton the girls 11-12 overall winner.
Other age group champions included Philip Lawrence (boys 8 and under), Christina Dodwell (girls 9 and 10), and Geoffrey Smith (boys 9 and 10).
Next event on the calendar is the Harbour Open which will be held at the BASA Pool from Wednesday, August 12 to Saturday, August 15. The annual Trunk Island swim follows on Sunday, August 16.
A number of top overseas swimmers are expected to fly in for both of these events.
