Fit again Hurdle to boost attack
Bermuda's new ball attack could be bolstered by the return of bowler Kevin Hurdle in St.Lucia this week.
The 33-year-old Social Club skipper has made a steady recovery from knee surgery and he could play a part in Bermuda's three match tour of St.Lucia that kicks off tomorrow with an encounter against a local select team.
"Kevin has been rehabbing well in the gym and should be up and running near the end of our tour to St.Lucia," commented an upbeat Bermuda physio Craig Brown.
The right-arm fast bowler, who stands over six feet tall, has been plagued by injury since the last time he represented Bermuda on a tour of Kenya in October 2007.
But his imminent return could sharpen a Bermuda seam attack that also boasts the fiery George O'Brien jr who picked up two wickets in his first match in the Caribbean against University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) last Friday.
Also expected to return to action in St.Lucia this week is Bermuda skipper Irving Romaine who sat out his team's 43-run win against UTT after bruising his right thumb the day before taking a return catch against Trinidad Premier One Day champions Connection Wanderers.
"Irving is okay . . . he just took a bruising to the right thumb and so we just took the pre-caution to rest him and he actually had a little knock in the middle after the game.
"He should be fine after a couple days rest and be up and running for St.Lucia," Brown said.
Also on the mend are all-rounder Janeiro Tucker and batsman Glenn Blakeney.
Tucker, who had blood injected into his right knee tendon late last year, took part in Bermuda's two matches in Trinidad last week while it remains hopeful Blakeney will make a full recovery from a back and shoulder injury that ruled him out of the Island's current tour of the Caribbean.
"Janeiro played both back-to-back games (in Trinidad) and lasted the entire matches," Brown said.
"He did suffer a few aches and pains which is normal, but otherwise he is coming along well along with Glenn - which bodes well for us in the future."
In the absence of the injured Clay Smith, Tucker captained Bermuda to World Cup qualification at the ICC Trophy in Ireland in 2005.
Bermuda, meanwhile, return from a month-long training exercise in the Caribbean at the end of the month when a final squad of 15 will be chosen to represent the Island in April's World Cup qualifiers in South Africa.
Gus Logie's team have been placed in Group B alongside ICC Associate powerhouse Kenya, the Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, Denmark and World Cricket League Division Three champions Afghanistan.
Twelve countries will compete in South Africa but only the top four will qualify for the 2011 World Cup and pocket additional funding which could run into the millions.
The top six countries will be awarded full ODI status while the top eight will compete in the next edition of the four-day Intercontinental Cup.
