Football funding cut by half
Government has gone back on its 2007 promise to provide Bermuda Football Association with $15million over five years, slashing the sport's governing body's budget by 50 percent.
The BFA, who under the plan were receiving $3m a year, have been told they will get just $1.5m this time around. But far from criticising Government, BFA General Secretary David Sabir is just grateful that in the current climate it wasn't cut by more.
And Sabir was quick to point out that while the BFA would have to tighten their belts, the loss of cash would have not impact of the new league structure planned for next season.
"It is what it is. I'm thankful that it's not more, it could have been cut by $1.7m or even $2m," he said.
There is no doubt however that the BFA are facing a massive shortfall in their budget, and Sabir acknowledged that the begging bowl will have to be sent out around the Island. Next season teams may well find themselves playing in the Digicel FA Cup, or the XL Dudley Eve.
n The play-off matches for the 10th spot in next season's Premier Division between the bottom club in the Premier Division, and the side finishing third in the First Division, will take place on Wednesday, April 1 and Thursday, April 9. Both games will be played at the National Sports Centre, kick-off 7.30 p.m.
