Former top golfer Card dies, age 83
Olga Card, one the best amateur players to grace Bermuda golf courses, has died in England at the age of 83.
In the 1960s she was regarded as the top lady golfer on the Island, winning the Bermuda Amateur Championships and the Mixed Foursomes – at that time one the premier tournaments on the golf calendar – with the men's amateur champion Louis Moniz. In 1968 she represented Bermuda at the Eisenhower Cup in Australia.
UBP leader and former professional Kim Swan yesterday paid tribute to Card who, he said, had greatly influenced his career.
"As a young professional at Port Royal in 1971-72 I used to look up to Olga. She was very approachable and someone who you could pick up pointers from.
"She was an exceptional and accomplished golfer, the best lady golfer in Bermuda at that time.
"She played at the same time as some of our top male players – Louis Moniz, Peter Tucker, Bill Pitt. "I was saddened to hear of her death."
