Franks' penalty settles it for Red Devils

North Village completed the semi-final line-up last night when a second half penalty by midfielder Sheldon Franks left Dandy Town, one of the pre-tournament favourites, pointless in Group B.

Last night's results mean that defending champions Vasco will play St.

George's in one-semi-final while Village will take on Boulevard in the other, both scheduled for October 31 at BAA Field.

Village, needing to win in order to join Vasco from their group, played with plenty of determination and only some slack finishing from veteran Elliott Jennings prevented them from taking a shock, early lead.

Just three minutes had elapsed when Jennings found himself perfectly placed inside the box but he put his shot wide of the near post and held his head in his hands knowing his shot should have hit the back of the net.

Town took longer to settle down but in the 14th minute they came close to opening the scoring when a Village raid broke down and a long ball into their half sent Khari Sharrieff through into the box. However, goalkeeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams timed his dash off the line perfectly and saved at the striker's feet.

As the half wore on Town created more chances but they were always lacking that final decisive touch in and around the penalty area. Sharrieff had his name taken by referee Roddy Burchall three minutes before the break for knocking the ball away the ball had gone out for a Village goalkick.

The closest Town would come to scoring all night was two minutes after the restart when midfielder Troy (Pinks) Lewis smashed a 25-yard shot against the crossbar. For a brief spell Town looked the more likely to score but Village were never out of contention as their defence stood firm, with Wayne Augustus outstanding on the right flank.

Town made the first substitution of the match in the 64th minute, bringing on Ascento Russell for out of touch Nirobi Smith, but it was Village who score that all important goal just two minutes later.

Town had the ball in their corner as Jennings and captain Damon Wade applied the pressure in not letting them out. Jennings' pass sent Wade through into the box and he was fouled by Don Lewis as Burchall pointed to the spot. Franks scored with his low shot to goalkeeper Cymande Davis' right.

Both teams had chances after that as the game hung in the balance. Nakia Smith put a shot wide of the near post after trying to lob the ball over Davis in the 70th minute and then five minutes later Village also cushioned their lead when a perfect long ball to the flank by Michael Hansey set up Smith before the supporting Wade drove his shot from an angle wide of the near post.

Wade started to pick his game up late in the match, showing his skills on the left side. But that narrow lead never allowed Village to rest and they endured a tense last few minutes as Town threw everything at them in a desperate bid to salvage the point that would carry them through.

Village lost Franks to a leg injury in the 82nd minute, with Shawn Dill coming on as a replacement and Jennings dropping back into midfield for the closing minutes.

Earlier Kaiwon Dill came on for Jamel Smith up front while Town replaced Don Lewis with Nathan Webb in a bid to boost their attack.

For a last minute corner even goalkeeper David went forward to the edge of the Village box but it would be their last chance as time ran out, leaving Town out of their first competition of the season.
