Gladwin and Dickinson in two-boat battle
Veteran sailors Gladwin Lambert and Stevie Dickinson are currently locked in a fierce two-horse race for the coveted comet fleet championship with only two races remaining on the 2008 schedule.
West End Sail Boat Club (WESBC) ace Lambert (33 points) and long-time crew Greg Proctor lead the standings by three points over defending champion Dickinson (36 points) and teenage crew Martin Finigan who have come on strongly following a slow start to the campaign.
Dickinson's East End Mini Yacht Club (EEMYC) stablemate Scott Fox (66 pointts) currently lies third but is way out of contention for top honours, as is WESBC's Rudy Bailey who has skipped several events this year.
The two-boat battle between Lambert and Dickinson is expected to heat up in the Great Sound tomorrow where the WESBC will play host to the Game Fish Inn Regatta.
Lambert, who won back-to-back fleet titles in 2005 and 2006, is confident he can continue his consistent form this weekend and make further inroads towards another championship. The former Somerset Trojans footballer has finished no lower than fourth in all regattas this season.
"The way I have been sailing this year I feel I have a good chance of winning because I have beaten Dickinson in different races this year," an upbeat Lambert told The Royal Gazette. "I feel my chances are just as good as Dickinson's.
"I don't feel any pressure . . . I just have to sail well and go out there and try and take care of business myself. I am going out to win rather than depend on other people's results to go my way."
Likewise, Dickinson fancies his own chances of retaining his title come season's end.
"I think my chances are pretty good if I can put it all together and sail consistent," he said. "I have done a bit of training (over the course of the season) preparing for other regattas, and hopefully this will help pull me through in the end.
"Things are a bit tight at the top at the moment, but there's no pressure on me."
