Goals galore during opening weekend of ISL
Two thrilling overtime matches headlined the opening weekend of the Island Soccer League (ISL), with 50 goals being scored in four games at the National Sports Centre on Friday and Saturday night.
As predicted, the opening night produced excitement and fanfare, something ISL commissioner David Bascome was pleased with.
In total, 50 goals from 32 different players, including five hat-tricks, showed that the season will only get better as the teams kick into high gear, said Bascome.
"The turnout was great and the staff and players are very encouraged," said Bascome. "The amount of young people at the game was amazing, watching them run around and feeling safe was refreshing.
"As far as the play on the field, well what more can you ask for in an opening weekend at ISL when you have two overtime games with golden goals, 50 goals, many hat-tricks, CellularOne and Lindo's giveaways. The players did a great job on and off the pitch.
"The weekend ended up being better than expected because of the way the fans participated with 'Power Girl' and Wendell Dill.
"With the a full schedule of games starting on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, I encourage fans to get tickets from CellularOne or Lindo's stores, it saves them from paying full price at the gate."
Of the two overtime games, the Knights come-from-behind win over the Titans was the highlight of all the matches played.
Down 5-1 and 5-2 at the half, the Knights came back to beat the Titans 8-7 in golden goal overtime, a thrilling win for Keishon Smith's men who was also pleased with the attendance of both nights.
"The attendance was great for the first weekend, it was an excellent way to start the season," said Smith.
"The people that came to the game were treated to some excitement, the atmosphere was nice and it was a fun-filled weekend.
"Our game was a very hard fought game between two good sides. For us it was more about staying focused and sticking to what we believe in. We knew the game was about scoring goals.
"Just when you think you are in control, a team can snatch one or two goals and regain the momentum. With us, we think we are a little bit fitter and more organised than other teams and tonight we were able to go the distance."
Also winning in overtime were the Kings who outduelled defending champions Union 9-8 in golden goal overtime.
Arsenal beat Royal 6-2, and 2008 champions Storm saw off Apex 7-3.
