Golden girl gymnasts win Bermuda's first medals

Bermuda's golden girls vaulted, somersaulted and cartwheeled to a memorable victory to claim the country's first medal at the Island Games yesterday.

And judging from this outstanding performance, there's more to come when the six-strong gymnastics team enter the Bollhalla gym in Mariehamm for the individual competitions tomorrow and on Friday.

Their triumph in the team event over six other entries was convincing and well deserved as they posted a total of 103 points, more than four ahead of silver medallists Isle of Man (98.85) who pipped Faroe Islands (bronze) by half a point. And it came after two of the team were still recovering from severe injuries.

Riann Ming fractured a bone in her hand three weeks' ago and Morgan Beckles was still on crutches only last week.

Showing rhythm, composure and plenty of confidence, Bermuda's girls lit up the stadium with a sparkling performance in the floor exercises, Caitlyn Mello giving the team the best possible start with a dazzling display which earned a score of 12.7 points.

Kaisey Griffith, who has represented Bermuda at two previous Island Games and at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006, impressed the judges even more as she scored 13.1.But there was little between the five competitors, the sixth member of the squad, Rosie Finnigan, having to wait until tomorrow to get her chance.

Beckles was handed a score of 12.65, Hannah King 12.4 and Ming 12.7.

On the vault, Beckles and Mello led the way with identical scores of 13.00, Griffith followed with 12.95, King 12.9 and Ming 12.8. In a competition which also included hosts Aland, Jersey, Menorca and Ynys Mon (a small island off Wales), Bermuda had entered as medal favourites. And there was little doubt they lived up to expectations.

"We weren't over confident," said coach Tina Willams.

"It's a set day with set skills, so all of the islands are on even par.

"It depends on the day who can compose themselves best.

"Obviously we have a lot of talented girls in Bermuda so we are one of the favourite islands.

"But they did really well to win and we're really pleased.

"Today I think we did better on vault. We have two options – two different vaults you can perform – and the one we chose for the girls seemed to work well. They all had really big vaults."

As for tomorrow's IFG individual competition, Williams admitted she was quietly confident of further success. "Wednesday is normally our better day," she said. "There are harder moves in IFG, and normally our girls are quite high up in that area.

"So, yes, we are looking for more medals. But again it depends on which girls can compose themselves and land on their feet.

"Today, I thought Kaisey (Griffith) was outstanding.

"She's worked really hard for this and I think she scored top for us on floor, and on vault Caitlyn and Morgan scored well.

"But it was an excellent team performance. They do complement each other."

Despite her success, Griffith said: "I could have done a little bit better on the floor but I'm not too disappointed overall.

"I'm looking forward to training tomorrow, trying to feel comfortable with the equipment and hoping for the best on Wednesday."
