Hall heads to Holland on tour

Trialist Freddy Hall will join Plymouth Argyle on their pre-season tour of Holland with manager Peter Reid keen to take a closer look at the Bermuda Hogges' goalkeeper.

Hall has been training with the Pilgrims for the past week after being recommended to the League One club by Hogges' co-owner Paul Scope and former West Ham striker Clyde Best.

Former Sunderland boss Reid and his assistant Paul Mariner, who watched Hall in Hogges action earlier this season, have been sufficiently impressed with the shot stopper to offer him a chance to win a permanent contract at Home Park.

The 25-year-old endured a baptism of fire in his first appearance for the Pilgrims in this week's friendly at Torquay, coming off the bench as a first half replacement for the injured Romain Larrieu.

Larrieu's misfortune could work in Hall's favour for he will almost certainly start tomorrow's opening tour match against top-flight side NAC Breda if the club captain fails to recover in time.

And with further games lined-up against Dutch giants AZ Alkmaar and First Division team SC Cambuur, Hall should have plenty of opportunity to impress the Plymouth coaching staff.

Scope has been working hard behind the scenes to pave the way for Hall's trial and travelled to the UK last week where he stayed at the home of his close friend, Mariner.

If Hall can reproduce the sparkling form he has shown for Hogges this season, Scope is confident the keeper can win a deal.

"Paul came over to watch the Hogges play as my guest and he talked to Clyde that night about Freddy," said Scope, who helped facilitate Khano Smith's move to Mariner's former club, New York Revolution.

"Both Clyde and I felt Freddy was ready to play at that level and I think if he can reproduce his performances this season in Holland he'll have a very good chance.

"I spoke to Paul today and despite it being a tough start for Freddy they have taken him to Holland, and with the other goalkeeper being injured he could see plenty of action.

"They're going to take a real good look at him as Paul appreciates it's not easy for a keeper coming off the bench."

The Hogges have been interested in attracting the patronage of a 'big brother' for a number of years and Scope said he and Mariner had talked about forging future links between the franchise and Plymouth.

Any future partnership, which has only been 'casually discussed', could also see Plymouth academy youngsters travel in the opposite direction to gain overseas experience.

"When I was over there we discussed a possible link-up with Plymouth regarding players," said the Robin Hood manager.

"Yes, we want to get players away and given a chance when we can, but we need to make sure they're prepared and ready.

"If we do get a link-up with a team like Plymouth we will be sending younger players over as we need to make sure we send those who will respond to that environment."

Scope believes Plymouth would be an ideal fit for the Hogges and offer Bermuda players a realistic route into the professional ranks.

"I think Plymouth, whether they're in the Championship or League One, would be a good level for Bermudians to aspire to. Kyle Lightbourne and Shaun Goater proved that.

"It's getting more and more difficult for players to go straight into a Premier League club.

"We've no more than had casual conversations but I like the club and it has a very good set-up. From the impressions I got from our discussions I think any link-up could be greater than just sending one player out there."

Hogges take on Northern Virginia Royals tomorrow at 8 p.m., and on Sunday at 6 p.m. Both games will be played at BAA Field. See live coverage of both games at www.royalgazette.com
