Hogges eyeing best of the Under-23s
Bermuda Hogges are pondering a squad overhaul next season and plan to bolster their ranks by drafting in the best under-23 national team players, club co-owner Paul Scope has revealed.
Having cast an eye over the new cycle of talent coming off the Island's production line during the under-23s' series of matches against USL-D2 teams, the Hogges hierarchy have identified a number of players who they believe can help them evolve into an established professional force.
Scope said Hogges planned to retain around a dozen of their current crop and supplement them with a sprinkling of youth from Bermuda Football Association's (BFA) national academy.
"We need to keep our core players on for experience next season but we would like to take a number of players aged around 22 who aren't going to college," Scope said. "You can't change things overnight and we'll want to keep around eight or nine of our current squad and add some fresh talent."
An agreement between the BFA and Hogges saw Scott Morton's under-23 side test themselves against pro teams this summer in preparation for their Pan Am and World Cup qualifiers.
They claimed the prize scalp of league powerhouse Charlotte Eagles in a 2-0 victory last weekend and Scope said Morton's men had impressed Hogges' coaches who had scouted all seven of the games.
"Although the under-23 games probably haven't been at quite the same intensity as ours, you get an idea of which players would be able to handle the extra physicality of the USL-D2.
"We've had great cooperation with Derek (Broadley) and David (Sabir) from the BFA, and we were never out to be their competitors. I imagine a number of the under-23 players will be looking to play for Hogges in the future. Seion Darrell has played for both teams this season and has come on tremendously."
Scope said Hogges would also be looking to widen their recruitment net and investigate the possibility of signing foreign players for next term.
"If we can bring in overseas players for not much cost then that should be part of our remit," he said. "Maybe next season we will look at foreign players coming in but there can be a costly element to it with accommodation, but we're not ruling it out. However, the majority of the Hogges squad will always be Bermudian."
Hogges take on Real Maryland Monarchs tonight in their final match of the season at the Richard Montgomery High School, Maryland. Kick off is at 7 p.m. (Bermuda time).
