Hogges get back on track with first away win
New Jersey Rangers 0
Bermuda Hogges 2
Bermuda Hogges picked up their first away victory of the season after beating in-form New Jersey Rangers thanks to goals from Keishen Bean and Nahki Wells.
It was the exact response the Hogges' coaches were looking for from their players who had suffered a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of high-flying Ironbound Express just two days earlier.
Saturday's win saw Bean open the scoring midway through the first period with a neat close range finish from Tyrell Burgess' left wing cross.
Hogges then doubled their advantage around 20 minutes from the final whistle when Nahki Wells' netted with a volley that crashed in off the post.
Tomorrow the Hogges wrap their first US road trip of the campaign when they face Central Jersey at the PDA Complex, in Zarepath. Kick-off is at 7.30 p.m. (Eastern Time).
Technical director Derek Broadley yesterday hailed the character of the Hogges' players and believed they were starting to show signs of developing a more ruthless edge.
"We showed a lot of character because we could have been deflated after losing 5-0," he said. "The most encouraging thing for me was that we killed the game very, very well.
"Call it gamesmanship if you will but we weren't rushing our goal kicks and were taking our time a little, you know, doing he same things Ocean City did to us.
"(Rangers) have had a good start to the season but we frustrated them, got them moaning at the ref and that was pleasing, we just looked more professional."
Debutant Ernest Signor impressed in defence and Burgess, reverting back to the left wing, was dangerous throughout, said Broadley, who admitted Hogges required goalkeeper Freddy Hall to be at the top of his game in order to preserve their two-goal cushion.
"Ernest Signor came in and did well in his first start. We could definitely do with some more strength in defence and if someone like Darius Cox can come in and get match fit then that will be a bonus to us.
"Every time we play we seem to be playing against a strong six-foot-tall forward so it's been a real test for our defenders. It's a different test to what they're used to at home.
"Freddy (Hall) was terrific for us and really kept us in it towards the end. Another player who did very well was Quadir Maynard who came on as a striker early on for the injured Shayne Hollis. Tyrell also looked a lot more comfortable on the left wing."
Hogges have targetted at least a point from tomorrow's match against Central Jersey.
Their only fitness concerns are Logan Alexander (hamstring), Seion Darrell (back) and Freddy Hall who is nursing a hand injury but should be given the okay by team physio Craig Brown.
"We set ourselves a total of four points and our goals is now achievable. Anything more than a draw will be a real bonus," said Broadley.
